Our Mystery Card games - The '70s Game, Back to the '80s, Back to the '90s

[quote:943ec6a036]On a second team, my replay save leaders were '85 Reardon (15) and '82 RL Jackson (13). On that team, I had '83 Tekulve, '94 Worrell, and '85 Schrom (who started some). In real life, Reardon had 41 saves, Tekulve had 18, Worrell had 11, and Jackson had 6. [/quote:943ec6a036]

Worrell had 127 innings on this team, but only 42 in real life.

I do think innings work into HAL's choice equation, but I don't think they're the only thing HAL considers. (In fact, I would guess it's a minor part of how HAL chooses a reliever.)

Only TSN Knows

Postby Semper Gumby » Thu Oct 12, 2006 6:09 pm

If TSN selected the "Do Not Use Closer Rule" setting, then HAL can / should ignore # of saves as a measure of effectiveness. Thus, he can use whoever in the late inning situations.

For the 80s, I believe TSN selected the "ignore" option.

If you have a dual use pitcher listed as one of your 5 starters (i.e., the 5th starter in the rotation settings but you're carrying 4 SPs*), I suspect HAL will never use the dual use pitcher in relief. So, you need to remove him from the rotation settings (at a min.) to entice HAL to use him in relief.

My belief - unless you have your RPs listed as the closer or set-up ... HAL will try to balance inning usage to match actual usage among the other RPs.

For example, you have Gossage as the closer (both sides) and Howe as the set-up (both sides).

HAL will pick and peck among your other 3 RPs based on their actual innings tossed. So, the RP with 100 innings would see more usage than the one with 38 innings assuming you haven't limited any other factors, e.g., not before, avoid.

One other thing about the "Saves" theory...

Postby bjs73 » Thu Oct 12, 2006 6:41 pm

I am fairly certain that the 200X games use the new fangled "Closer Rating" rule set from strat-o.

The 80's game DOES NOT.

Therefore, a card with more saves in the other formats will actually have a "Closer Rating" where as in the 80's game there is NO "Closer Rating."

In that case, HAL choosing the reliever with the most saves in the 200X games probably is as simple as HAL choosing the reliever with the best "closer rating."

Make sense?

Not sure I agree with the point about the SP/RP not being used in relief.
I have Kison in that role and he was used once, and it was in relief.
On another team I have Sorenson and he has not been used at all.
I don't agree with the innings theory either. If that were the case, the fifth man in your pen would be getting innings. But going back to the Burke experience, HAL did not use him once during the first 30 or 40 games of the season.
Before I set the pen, HAL was using Eichhorn as set-up and Kipper as closer. The other guys in the pen were Dayley, Dawley and Moore (it was a six man pen) and they were being used in middle relief.
I basically set my pen around the 40 game mark based on the usage to that point.
So it's not innings.

All of this information has been extremely helpful, and thank you one and all. As for Outofleftfield, in the league you have Jackson in, you just took 2 out of 3 from me on Wednesday night! (vs the Michigan Cronies III).

So with all this confusion, and obvious dedication from a core group of players, why doesn't TSN just "post" the flow chart for HAL's decision making? I mean certainly the information can't be "protected" (or worth anything for that matter), and then managers could make informed decisions on how to set their players/global strategies.

Or is that asking to much??

Thanks again,

Tom

PS: The concept of having to "entice" the game engine to do anything is hysterical . . . .

Nothing But Time

If you had -

You can print out a few box scores during the season and map back to HAL's usage after he reveals the cards.

Not sure if you have dealt with strat-o-matic much, so this might be "old news" for your. I would guess that it's really not TSN's fault. Although there are some more advanced settings available on the CD-Rom, HAL's decision-making process is not available on the CD-Rom from Strat, the game's maker. So, it's not surprising that it's not available here either.

I would guess that Strat just chooses not to make that info available. My impression is that they are very concerned about copyright infringement. They do have some competitors, so this does make some sense. But I'd sure like to have the ability to change HAL's decision-making process rather than, in the CD version of the game, trying to figure out levels upon levels of settings.

Integration

Postby bjs73 » Fri Oct 13, 2006 11:21 am

Integrating HAL SuperBullpen into this port would take care of all of this stuff with relievers.

The problems don't weigh in so much on what the game engine can and cannot do. The problem lies in how to integrate the web based input system to the game engine itself.

If we had the HAL SuperBullpen Management system already available on the CD ROM, then this issue wouldn't even be a topic on the board.

SuperHAL

In eMail to eMail leagues that I played, you can do some great things with HAL if you can re-work his logic lines assuming you know what cards you're playing.

Of course, you need to monkey around with the computer manager (CM) interface and learn a little (I mean) logical programming skills.

Or else, you'll learn what happens when you just program the CM to cover pitching assignments for a nine inning game. :(
