So What do you guys think of my first team?

NYCalderon,

we must have been typing away at the same time ... I didn't see your comments when I sent mine ... I guess if you play enough times as we have, you start to recognize the performers (HOJO) and the non-performers (Nettles), and you stay away.

i have a list of players I rarely if ever use on my teams. Guys like McGee, Van Slyke, Nettles, Kingman are just a few.

This newby's team is shaping up pretty good. I remember when I first started, I was very grateful for guys like Sykes, DJ, YountFan, BJ, Sogcomando and a few others who really helped me through the nuances of the game. Now I'm hooked, and its all their fault !!!

Thanks to all of you. The suggestions were all very helpful. Sid, Darling, Nettles and Smalley were all players that I liked; but I like winning better. Hopefully all of these moved pay off. I was dead at work today as a result of meking moves until 1AM last night!

I actually like Van Slyke a lot and he was on a few of my best teams... I have had Nettles on a few teams and I think he can be pretty good... but as I said before he is pretty risky in a small park (as is Van Slyke but a little less so)

Why is nettles risky in a 'small' park? What does the park size do to him?

griff -

as you play this game you will want to (and need to) understand how to read the cards. It seems complicated at first but it gets more fun as you scan the player cards. I suggest you read the faq about how to read player cards which is linked on any card you look at. Anyway my reservation about Nettles is based on what is called the ballpark homerun effect (or BPHR). This is represented by the # symbol on the card. If you have any questions after that feel free to ask. There are also several links on this board (and the old one) which go into greater detail. Many of the vets here are always willing to give you more insight as well..

OK, so it is a HR issue. That is what wasn't clear.

Van Slyke

Just a comment: when we played face to face leagues here at home, Van Slyke ALWAYS had a good year. One of those things. Think Butler gets overlooked sometimes. Not a Raines or a Henderson, but consistent, and all his cards are usable.
