No backup SS - Is this bad?

Postby wryoung » Thu Jul 16, 2009 3:25 pm

How bad can it be not carrying a backup shortstop? Templeton is my starter and I have had him quite a few times and he doesn't seem to miss much, but I don't know what the computer will do if he goes down. Thanks for any advice in advance.

My team is here if it helps any http://fantasygames.sportingnews.com/baseball/stratomatic/70s/team/team_other.html?user_id=55645

Most likely a backup infielder will slide into his spot.
If I remember correctly, their rating will be 1 worse than their worse rating.

Any player playing out of position at SS is automatically given the worst possible fielding rating, which is something like 5E88 or something like that.
The only time a player could play out of position and not suffer that dire of a penalty is in the outfield.
LF to RF is a -1 to range
LF to CF is a -2 to range
RF to LF is not change to range
RF to CF is -1 to range
I think CF to LF or RF has no change in range.

I believe the above is accurate. If I'm wrong, someone please clarify.

Get a backup SS

Postby Larryrickenbacker » Mon Jul 20, 2009 10:34 pm

Howdy,

My career record is just under .500, but I'd manage to [i:dde0d1e4d8]find[/i:dde0d1e4d8] a utility infielder who could play SS. I like Dal Maxville for this role, as he's rated as a "2" at both SS and 2b. Good luck.

Larry

PS: SS is just too important defensively to risk having a "4", even for a game or two. YMMV.

Thanks for the help guys. I picked up a backup. I have an idea how bad a 5e88 can be because I have played Kingman in the field a season or 2 and it is brutal at a lesser position. Can't have that at SS.
