IF those are my only 2 choices I would opt for Lopes because of his OBP. However, I hate the 3L. I typically take cheaper choices at 2b like Cash, a Wills/Cruz platoon and on occasion a McAuliffe if I need another L bat.

Wow! The anti-Garner tide is pretty strong!--and who am I to buck that tide?

My overall defense is OK. A link to the team is above. On the plus side I've got Cedeno in CF, Kessinger at SS and Bando at 3B. And Carbo & George Foster are OK defensively on the OF corners. Dick Allen is a 4e15 at 1B--not bad, considering his bat.

The defensive weak link would be at C, where I've currently got a Wock/Stinson platoon--I [i:6135443f6b]could[/i:6135443f6b] save some money at 2B and put it into catcher, but I'm kinda tempted to try this out with Lopes and my cheap C platoon and see what happens...If they don't hit well enough to justify the loss of defense, I can make some changes. But there's still some time to play around with the available talent.

Lopes is solid man. The L tilt is a bit miss leading I think. All is power is vs LHP, but is OB is pretty even

Dig the counts in Vets

OB changes vs LHP above 40 is good 45 is excellent, over 50 outstanding
vs LHP: 49, 55, 44, 56, 53
vs RHP: 41, 40, 42, 43, 48

Its the slg that goes left
vs LHP: 43, 50, 27, 58, 102
vs RHP: 34, 30, 31, 31, 36

Compare him to Lou Brock OB
vs LHP: 31, 41, 38, 49, 37
vs RHP: 40, 54, 45, 38, 47

He is Lou Brock with a better left side as far as getting on base. Brock has higher BA, but Lopes walks more.

Many thanks, YF. Just eye-balling the cards, it seemed like Lopes's OBP held up pretty well against RHP, but this confirms it. And it shows why his 79 season can be outstanding even with the strong lefty tilt. He loses his power but still has great OB vs RHP, and he flat out kills LHP.

This also squares with jcm's view that Lopes can play the leadoff role in most any year. With the hitters I've got coming up behind him, if Lopes can get on base vs RHP, he will be contributing. Gotta try him at this point....

I would try Lopes too. If your catchers don't work out, there's usually a good fielder on the wire, whether it's Ellie Rodriguez or Grote or Fosse or Dempsey. One of those guys is usually out there so you can make up the defense at catcher if you need it.
