Mystery Card games... what's coming up!

Our Mystery Card games - The '70s Game, Back to the '80s, Back to the '90s

I agree also. A 50's -60's game with , I hope , the best Musial, Williams,
DiMaggio cards from the 40's.

I was planning on playing the '90's game when it comes out, but I guess I
am not qualified. Since I was not a ML fan in the 90's I don't know the
requisite 15% or is it 85% (?) of the players. Too bad.

I also claim honors for being the oldest person playing SOL. I can gum old
pretzels too - and regularly do. What is my prize?

For all you old geezers (50s/60s camp)

Postby ROBERTLATORRE » Mon Jun 14, 2010 2:37 pm

While I'm not old enough to remember those players, I'm a huge fan of the era. When I was growing up and building an interest in baseball (70's), I got a daily history lesson from my uncles and mother, who were Yankee fans since the 40's. My Grandfather raised his family in the Bronx and used to take them to games all the time, my Mom could quote stats from the Yankee teams in the 40's, 50's, and 60's like nobody's business! LOL

Anyway, some of you know PWootten from leagues here, he sent a couple great books to me that you might enjoy, some I picked up on my own:

- The Era, 1947-1957: When the Yankees, the Giants, and the Dodgers Ruled the World by Roger Kahn

- Black and Blue: Sandy Koufax, the Robinson Boys, and the World Series That Stunned America by Tom Adelman

- Sixty Feet, Six Inches: A Hall of Fame Pitcher & a Hall of Fame Hitter Talk about How the Game is Played by Bob Gibson, Reggie Jackson, and Lonnie Wheeler

- We Would Have Played for Nothing: Baseball Stars of the 1950s and 1960s Talk About the Game They Loved (The Baseball Oral History Project) by Faye Vincent

- A Tale of Three Cities: The 1962 Baseball Season in New York, Los Angeles, and San Francisco by Steven Travers

Not a single tale of Steroids, HGH, the clear and the cream, or blood spinning in any of them!!!

Summer's here, anyone from the old geezer crowd have any recommendations for a good read???

One I read recently, a relatively new book was "High Flying Birds"
about the 1942 St.Louis Cardinals.

70's fans, I recommend "Big Hair and Plastic Grass: A Funky Ride Through Baseball and America in the Swinging 70's" by Dan Epstein. Just came out last month.

You Oscar Gamble fans will love it, as it is his "big hair" that the book is usually referring to. Also Ross Grimsley.

I've read lots of 70's baseball books, but still found plenty of nuggets I hadn't heard before.

I have read "The Era" and "Tale Of Three Cities" and they are both great. However, when people ask me to recommend a baseball book I always tell them "The Summer Game" by Roger Angell. He wrote a couple follow-up type books too but the original was the classic.
