Darrell Porter (70s)

Howdy,

I didn't draft Catcher Darrell Porter, but I wound up with him, anyway! On balance, he's a good-hitting lefty Catcher in a decade of weak hitting. His arm and ability to throw out runners concerns me.
What do you 70s vets think of Darrell Porter? Is he worth the his salary and modest defensive skills? BTW, I'm in Arlington stadium. We also have a Jerry park in our division as well as Dodger stadium and Three Rivers, fwiw.

A bit pricey, you just have to watch closely to determine what season he has and be prepared to dump him quickly.

Jayhawk hit the nail on the head... I think he is expensive enough that, if you get an early read that he is probably on a poorer card, dump him. Personally I have never used him (I prefer 2 or better defensive rating at C) but he seems to be a frequent visitor to the early waiver wire in many of my leagues. IMO all 3 of his Brewer cards are useless (2 of them he can't hit, the other he hits OK but is an 8R, kind of expensive for a platoon), and only the 79 card is worth his price unless you are in a hitters park. Try him, but proceed with caution.

Here he is in Royals on a team that was OK regular season but got hot in the playoffs and won it. This was the first time I used him and I picked him off the waiver wire due to the amount of walks he had.

Watch the walks. If isn't getting a lot real quick, you don't have 1979. I agree with Jayhawk and Conndor. Anything other than '79 isn't worth the price.
