Dykstra or Grissom? 90s Mystery League

Postby mille1212 » Mon Aug 08, 2011 8:22 am

Giving this a new thread with a new heading.... Opinions needed.

1st Draft ever and I think I'm just about ready for opening day.

I have a solid def (cf1(-2), 2b1, ss2, c1) up the middle and at the rest of the positions too (1b1, 3b1, lf3(+2), rf2(0)). I was able to downgrade my SP to upgrade many obp's after an initial bad draft at the Astrodome (didn't understand the concept of build a team around the dome).

[b:bbc6bf4751]Still have one dilemna in my mind[/b:bbc6bf4751].

Dykstra is available (cf2(+1), AA*, 2.2Injury, 292 AVG, 396 OBP). I have Grissom who is cf1(-2), AA*, 274 AVG, 325 OBP, and no injury issues.

When considering my other players, is the downgrade from 1 to 2 in range and -2 to +1 in arm defensively worth the upgrade in average from 274 to 292 and to OBP from 325 to 396 with the injury risk playing at the Astrodome (2, 2, 2, 2)?

First a disclaimer:

I am a horrible mystery card manager. I wait waaaaaaaaay too long to cut players when it should be obvious what I have (case in point: I just cut Schmidt in 80s after 84 games batting under .220 with splits that have shown he is doing better against righties all season - so '78 likely)

That said, I would go Dykstra over Grissom. The 70 points in OBP will far outweigh the going from a 1 to a 2 (still very good) in CF. All the other 1s you have make this an even easier decision in my option. Plus you still have a AA17 and with this team, I'd run alot.

Good luck, I much prefer small ball to the boppers - I'm in 2 keeper leagues and in Royals in both.

I'd love to see how your team progresses, so hopefully you'll give us progress reports.

Again, good luck.

Thanks for the tip. I got the same from another, so I made the move.

This is my first year, so I'm not quite sure how to make my team run alot.

I am considering setting my team base stealing to normal. Then, individually setting my A-AA base stealers to more individually (3 players). Should individually set my B too (1 player).

I see no way to set my base running setting individually, so I am considering setting my team baserunning to aggressive. I have two 17s, two 15s, one 14, two 13 baserunners. The rest are below.

I am not sure about hit and run. I am considering leaving my team hit/run at normal and individually setting any Cs that are weak hitters to more. I might even consider team conservative.

Any thoughts on this thinking?

I have played I think over 600 teams and have tried many speed/H & R teams over the years and these are my thoughts on your settings:
H & R-I always set to "Extra Conservative". You can check the "B" rated guys to "H & R More" if they have a fast guy in front of them. The "B" rated guy will become an "A" rated guy if the runner is held on, but the runner can still end up having to try to steal fairly often. The H & R is usually a bad percentage play with a decent hittier, thus the "Extra Conservative" setting. I rarely see a decent percentage of success with any higher setting and it is usually a better play to let a good hitter hit away.
Stealing-IMO "Normal" is about the highest setting you can use and achieve around a 75% success level unless your team is very fast and was built with the intention of stealing bases being a larger than normal part of your offense. When setting to "steal more", I think you can set all the "19" hold guys to steal more and some of the "18" guys who have a decent back number in the range of 14/13 or so. I think anything lower than that will have slower guys running too much. The steal letter ratings don't matter in this game. An important factor in stealing IMO is where the guys bat in your order. Usually many of them are at the top of the order with your best hitters to follow and I don't want them being thrown out stealing when the RBI guys are coming to bat.
Base Running-The aggressive base running settings scare me a little, as I know how aggressive the comparable steal ratings are. Many disagree with me on this though. I would not use more than normal myself, but feel free to give aggressive a try. As you probably only have this one team, you can check out the box scores to see how many guys are being gunned down. Another thing to consider is that you may want to be more aggressive at home, where your speed is an advantage and it is tougher to score a run. Taking a few more chances may be the way to go. On the road in the hitting parks, you may want to reign it in a little, as you are more likely to kill a big rally if thrown out on the bases.
