The SS to win with....

Postby Hakmusic » Thu Nov 30, 2006 5:21 pm

This comes out of a discussion that I was having with another manager. I know people build their teams very differently, and there are different types of teams that win and varying perspectives on value, but with that all said, I wanted to do an informal poll on what has won for you at SS.

Putting aside who you think is a good value, etc. here is the question.

If you go back to your winning teams, teams that won a championship or finished with 95 or more wins only (no we won 88 but were great). which category does your SS fall into:

1) Premiere: Yount, Trammel, Ripkin, Smith, Larkin and Fernandez
2) value/good defense: Templeton, Burleson, Concepcion, etc through Bowa.
3) value/good hit/bad defense: Franco, Smalley, Mullinks, HoJo, etc.
4) super value: Guillen, Washington, Uribe, etc.

Do it as an exercise, I am thinking the results may be surprising (but I could be wrong).

I'll start. I haven't finished my count, but I have:

3 Younts, 4 Smiths, 2 Fernandez, and 1 Templeton. so:

1) 9
2) 1
3) 0
4) 0

7 championship teams:

2 Ripkens
1 Smith
2 Smalleys
1 Fletcher/Guillen
1 Owen

so,
A) 3
B) 0
C) 2
D) 2

I will now look at my 95+ non-title teams.

If you can't get Yount then go cheap and spend the money else where. There a lots of guys you can use if you don;t mind a 3 (which I don't). Schofield and Russell are two to consider.

I have only had 5 teams that were League Champs or won 95+ games. I did not include one from an all under 4M League. My SSs were:

Larkin
Yount (twice)
Trammell (twice)

I have had only one championship team out my five with 95 plus wins.

Dave Concepcion was the shortstop. He hit 20 home runs that year for me.
