"By team" draft?

Postby honestiago1 » Fri Oct 21, 2005 4:05 pm

Has anyone ever gone with the idea of drafting players that appear on the team lists? What I mean is that, coaches "draft," say two of the major league franchises (one American, one National League team). When they set up their drafts, they can only take players who actually player for those teams. Granted, there's some crossover, but some players (Brett, Yount, Sandberg, for example), only played for one team, so you'd have to draft that team to get access to them. In addition, you'd have to weigh offense versus defense. Cubs pitching, for example, ain't too good (though quite a few of their pitchers had good years with OTHER teams).

I assume that, were this league set up, you'd have to play in one of the stadiums you chose. This could also present problems. For example, say I want Sandberg and Yount, so I draft the Cubs and Milwaukee. Normally, I'm a manager that prefers pitcher's parks with VERY low BP HR ratings. With County and Wrigley, I wouldn't be getting exactly what I wanted (and moving guys out of their natural habitat affects their hitting).
I'd also have to think about where to draft whom. Sutcliffe and Reuschal for example, appear on my list, as well as CLE (Sut), LA (Sut), NYY (Reus), PIT (Reusch) and SF (both), respectively. If those teams are drafted, I have to consider whether the opposing coach will rank them. I couldn't even get Lee Smith outright, as he has a BOS year. On the other hand, Teddy Higuera is MINE, as is Chris Bosio, so I can rank them last without worrying about losing them.

On the whole, here's some of what I'd get unopposed with a MIL-CHI draft:

SP: Higuera
SP: Bosio
1B: Cooper
SS/CF: Yount
RF: Deer
LF: Oglivie
3B: Molitor
2B: Gantner
1B: Durham
2B: Sandberg
SS: Dunston

Hmmm... IF=Cooper, Sandberg, Yount and Molitor (wow...could I afford it?). OF=Oglivie, Dawson (if I get lucky) and...well, whoever I can scrounge up (or I could play Dunston at SS and stick Yount in CF.

Anyway, it seems an interesting idea to me, though I'm not sure who'd want to try it out. I'd be willing.

Another wrinkle

Is that coaches each pick one team, but their second is determined either randomly, or another coach picks it for them (variation of the "poison pill" idea). I think one pick, one random from what's left would be nice, but we'd have to have someone trustworthy make up the list of what's left.

Some ideas

POSSIBLES: Managers draft National League teams, then draft American league teams in reverse order. Or simply let everyone pick a team, then pick the second in reverse order. The draft is done as usual (autodraft style). Managers with proprietary picks (players that ONLY played for their teams) of course place these picks at the bottom of their cards (as many as they decide to take).

POSSIBLE WRINKLE: Proprietary picks CANNOT be traded, and cannot be dropped from the roster (they are "franchise players," so if you get the bad year, well, you're stuck with it).

WRINKLE: teams are required to carry 25 players at all times.

WRINKLE: No trades whatsoever. You can only dip into your "minor league system" (free agents that are tied to your two teams).

WRINKLE: As far as drafting goes, we could do it by bidding. The coach with the lowest payroll gets the first pick of teams, and the order stays the same all the way through. EX: I bid 72M for first pick. Joe Blow bids 70M. Joe Six Pack bids 67M. Six pack gets first slot, Blow gets #2, and I get #3. This order stays the same until 24 teams have been drafted (WRINKLE: reverse order draft of a single proprietary player from an undrafted team [EX: no one drafts San Diego. The manager with last pick of teams decides to claim Gwynn as his single pick from the undrafted teams]). Bids would have to be in whole numbers, and would be completely open (an auction of sorts, with a set start date/time and one for finishing). This means top bidders get pick of the litter, but have less money to work with (a challenge for experienced managers). Ties are broken randomly (I'll chuck a d20 for each tie and tell everyone what it is -- I won't cheat--I'd rather lose honorably than shaft someone).

Comments anyone?

One thing you could do to eliminate owners drafting the same player, is assign players to the team they played the most years with. For players who split 2 years, you could assign them to the 1st team listed. The downside is it makes slim pickin's at the positions for some teams. But this could make trading more valuable. I always wanted to try something like this, it would be interesting.

Good idea

Then there would be no overlap. We could keep the idea of drafting players from "undrafted teams," settling that before we go into the draft.

So: a player is assigned to the team he played the most years for. If there is a split (2 for 2 teams, 1 for a third), the player is determined to belong to the team that appears first on the card (or rather, the first two years).

EX: Fred Lynn's card has first two years BOS, next two BAL, then CAL. He belongs to BOS, as those years come first (ulp! That means Lynn, DwEvans, Boggs and Clemens are ALL completely BOS [yeouch!]).

Sounds interesting.

I love this idea. Count me in if you do a league like this.
