Let's see if I have learned anything

Postby STEVEPONEDAL » Sun Dec 25, 2005 5:27 am

Here is how my second team looks. I picked up a little more O but my D may be a little weak up the middle. I probably won't see as many DPs on this team. I am going to try to pick up Harold Reynolds for some top of the order speed and SBs. Maybe drop Thigpen and go all the way with Hernandez.

Any other thoughts from anyone?

Thanks

I don't think that your defense is a problem at all. Grich is one of those guys who has monster potential as a 2B and if you get a crappy card, it's fairly easy to distinguish before 39 games.

Personally, I think that Bosio is way overpriced. His dollar value rarely seems justified by the numbers he puts up. That being said, I think Welch is overpriced too.

If you were to drop Thigpen in preseason, I'd bet you that he'd still be available from the waiver wire at game 60 or greater. He's overpriced also but he isn't a bad pickup if the rest of the bullpen is performing poorly mid-season. Problem is whether or not you'll have 3 million bucks by then or not.

I'd be interested in knowing what your waiver position is and what top talent is still left for you to get during the waiver round before suggesting what you should look for.

My career record in the 80's game is below .500 so take what I say with a grain of salt.

You don't have a backup 1B or 3B. Someone like Enos Cabell or even Bill Almon, who costs less than 1m, would be great in that roll. Al Woods is dead weight and should be dropped. Drop him for your backup 1B/3B. Don't drop Grich for Harold Reynolds. The difference between a 1 and a 2 defensively is far less than the difference in offensive production between those two. Grich is one of the best 2B in the 80's game. When you use Grich you have to have a decent backup as all of his possible card years are below 600 PA, which means possible 15 game injuries. You have UL Washington that can come in to play SS moving Oquendo over to 2B. I would rather see a better hitting 2B for a backup like maybe Wilfong, Remy or Royster even.

IMO you have way too much invested in your bullpen. I would drop Thigpen for another .75 guy at least. Campbell has nice cards but in the 2-3 times I have used him he has sucked royally. Maybe it is just my bad luck or something.

I would rather see someone like Cooper, Hargrove, Madlock, Molitor or the like instead of Hrbek at 1B in Dodger Stadium. Hrbek's BPHRs will be outs there.

Hope these ideas are useful. Merry Christmas!

Potential (as always)

I always like Hurst. He can be very effective in a pitcher's park, and decent anywhere else. He's going to get hit 4 of 5 years, so keep an eye on his hits per IP. He gets out of jams with K's. You have a staff that doesn't give up a lot of walks (unless you get a bad Drabek year), but which might give up a hit per inning overall. Your righties are not big K guys, so they will need a little IF help from time to time (all of these guys are capable of having great years, though).

I'd drop Thigpen, as well. You're gambling on his great year, when you can do the same with Willy and Campbell. In any case, I don't know that you need both Campbell and Thigpen, so you probably should get a cheapy there. Think about dropping Falcone for a straight SP so you can shorten up your bullpen (a fifth SP [rather than S/R pitcher) will only eat innings if someone is injured, which is pretty rare.

You have very good IF defense, and Oquendo covers you all over the field when the injuries occur. I'm no Jeff Leonard fan, but I do like Gary Matthews. Remember, he's a 3 in RF. I'm very interested to see what you get out of Milner. I've always wanted to try him out, but simply never have. I like those negative arms in the OF.

On the whole, you have a decent starting staff, some good hitters in the lineup, good defense. There is not a lot of team speed, though, which you may want to take a second look at. Playing in a pitcher's park, stealing bases and base running are important. Be leery of those very low OBP's among your OF's (with the exception of Matthews).

I wish I could help you but I am on my first 80's team and I suck. Clemens is at 3-9 now and my team OBP has went from .340 or so down to .317 in just over a week. Good luck with your team and Merry Christmas.

Great Thoughts

Postby STEVEPONEDAL » Sun Dec 25, 2005 12:40 pm

I currently have waiver requests in on Armas and H Reynolds for Matthews and Leonard. My plan is to 2B Reynolds at the top of the lineup for some speed OBP and SBs. I am going to 1B Grich and thenplatoon DH with Hrbek and Seitzer.

Milner is batting 252 with no errors in the league I am currently in and looks to be 20-20 HR/SB by the end of the season.

the advice on Thigpen makes sense. I will porobably stick with Falcone, he has been my setup guy and closer against LHB, it seems he is having a good reverse year.

The .75 pitchers that I am familiar with are gone for now. So until become more familiar with them, Ackers and
Williamson will mop up.

So, we will see how the waivers go for now.

Happy Holidays and Thanks

Hrbek and the BPHRs

So how will that work, Hrbeks' BPHRs are on a 1-8 roll and for Dodger Stadium is a 1 to 4 for Homeruns. So does that mean that Hrbek will only get BPHRs on the 1- 4 roll?

That means that if you roll that 1-8 to get Hrbek's BPHR at home then another roll is done and if it is 1-4 it is a HR. If it is 5-20 it is a flyout. On the road you may encounter better HR parks for better results from Hrbek. Since half of your games are in a pitcher's park I reccomended the hitter's with more BA and doubles than Hrbek like Molitor, Cooper, Madlock and Hargrove.

I still reccomend keeping Grich at 2B and getting a better hitter to play 1B instead of Harold Reynolds. The few times I have had Reynolds he doesn't hit or have good OBP. His defense and speed are a constant though. If you really want Reynolds then drop or trade Grich IMO.

Don't really like D.Henderson in CF for your park. BP effects again.

How much do ball park effects really matter though? I mean...if you have two or three ball park homeruns on your card what's the odds that they will come up so often? If they do...it could be valuable in road games.

I'd avoid players with four, five #HR's on a card though.
