Tough choice for waivers ... Looking for some 70's advice

Postby Hakmusic » Fri Jan 08, 2010 3:22 pm

I am sitting with the first waivers pick and the FA wire is stocked. I am an 80's player, not a 70's player, so I don't know so much of the subtleties of this game, so I am looking for some advice on who to pick.

The wire has:

Jackson, Reggie
Schmidt, Mike
Clemente, Roberto
Lynn, Fred
Allen, Dick R
Davis, Willie

thanks!

Hak
I currently have Aaron in RF, North in CF, Gamble as my DH, and no LF, so Jackson or Clemente would mean a poor fielding LF.

I only have Perez at 1B so Allen is appetizing.
I currently have Hebner at 3B, who I like, but Schmidt is Schmidt.

I could trade Hebner for a LF (I have an offer) and draft Schmidt.

I am leaning toward trading Hebner for the LF and picking Schmidt or picking Allen. I like Jackson and Clemente a lot too, but they don't fit my needs as well.

I would appreciate any thoughts. Is one choice clearly superior?

hard to pass up the lefty power. i suspect you'll be facing a lot of RHP in your division? if so, pick reggie and move hank to lf or 1b.

What Park are you in.

Hard to pass on Reggie or Dick Allen.

Allen, Schmidt and Jackson are the 3 real choices. I personally like Schmidt, especially if there is some lefty pitching in your division.

i am in a neutral park, Veteran's.

I am definitely leaning towards these three: Schmidt, Allen, and Jackson. If I was starting from scratch, I'd probably go with Jackson or Allen, but I'm not sure. Schmidt's advantage is that he plays 3B ...

but, since i need a 1B, and can trade for a LF, I am wondering if Allen or Achmidt would be a better choice.

The idea of moving Aaron to 1B is an interesting one ...

Go with Schmitty Hak. Allen is overpriced and there are many more options at 1B, including some decent platoons, than at 3B.

I would probably keep Hebner and draft Reggie moving Hank to 1B.

You take Reggie all the way...Why???

1. no such thing as too many LH power hitters on your team in the 70's game. You will always face almost twice as much RHP as LHP
2. you move Aaron to LF because range is not important in LF and his -2 arm gets boosted on throwing out runners going to 3B or home and his E factor is only 6 to start with.
3. keep Perez who is one of the better value run producers for the money in the 70's game at 1B
4. if you can afford or if available get D Buford to play 3B. If he's not available either find someone or platoon guys who will have a high OBP, who are at least a 1-13 running, and hit 2nd in your lineup behind North.
5. sit back and have fun watching Reggie, Perez, Aaron, and Gamble drive home all those runners

jmc, know I now why I like playing against you. He has gotta take Schmidt because LFs and 1Bs are much easier upgrades. A LH lineup that includes gamble, reggie and hebner is very good but too much 3R-ish.

I'd go with Reggie as well, moving Aaron to 1B and trading or picking up a LF. Otherwise I agree that Allen and Schmidt are fine options, probably in that order.
