Howdy,

OK, so you didn't manage to land Metzger or little Eddie Brinkman for 75 cents. You want to try combining defense with a little offense at SS. Who are you two picks?

Larry

PS: I'd probably suggest Kessinger and Harrelson, and of course they'd be slanted more toward defense than offense..

I have used Templeton with some pretty good results.

Templeton always hits, though you can expect 35 erros minimum.

I just went back and looked at the most recent time I had Templeton...He hit .339 with 11 HRs at Wrigley, but he made 46 errors...Didn't realize his defense sucked so bad. Well, maybe he had good range, or maybe I was willing to take the trade off...or maybe I had too many leagues going on at once and didn't notice...

I suppose he doesn't count, but I'm getting a .327 avg and 1.090 OPS through 222AB from Rick Auerbach. He is currently my starting SS even considering the awful defense.

That explains why you are #2 on the Top 60 list for the 70s/80s Players Championships.

I just picked him up for round 3 as my 2nd choice! 8-)

Actually, he hasn't been playing for a lot of the season.
I have had insanely good luck with free agents in the 70s.
Perez, Kingman and Oliva all with top years, all off the FA wire. As of now, I currently have 98 more runs scored than the second highest team in my league.

I wasn't using Auerbach at first because his D was so bad, but because Burleson was hitting so poorly, I benched him and started Auerbach instead.
I started using him regularly from game 61, and I have had a W/L record of 42-12 since.

The lesson here is that you definitely use him and take the hit defensively if you have his best year.

He's pricey but I've gotten good results from Concepcion the couple of times I've used him...

590 89 161 16 5 20 71 48 73 29 14 21 .273 .325 .419...1976
637 100 177 18 3 22 78 67 99 25 6 26 .278 .344 .419...1979

If you get Yount's best year he'll put up a bunch of offense...With Templeton you have to decide if the 100+ runs he'll score and the 40-50+ RBI are worth the 30-40 errors...Belanger on his best card can give you a .300BA and 100 runs scored at the top of the order

Eddie Brinkman '74 gave me 12 HRs and 70 RBI's at Oakland batting 9th...I would sign on for that every season if I could.

Patek

Postby Larryrickenbacker » Fri Feb 12, 2010 9:47 am

Howdy,

Noticing Freddie Patek's proclivity for hitting Doubles, good speed and base-swiping ability, I tried him once. He's quite affordable, afterall.
I was disappointed. His OBP was Metzger-like. The Doubles weren't there and SBs can only occur when one is on [i:9daf7a6b37]base[/i:9daf7a6b37]. The [i:9daf7a6b37]one[/i:9daf7a6b37] time I drafted Belanger he hit well for me.
