60's Mystery Card Set ?? Letter to Bernie (and TSN/SOM)

Postby RickRanger » Sat Dec 25, 2010 9:46 am

Hi Bernie,

I started playing strat in the mid-60's when I was 11. I'm now 56 and, if you can believe this, I'm an Army Colonel (called out of retirement) serving in Afghanistan. Now more than ever, TSN/Strat has become my main source of entertainment.

My favorite era is the 60's -- like most lifelong baseball fans, the excitement and enthusiasm I had as a kid fueled my happiest and strongest memories of the game. I also suspect that a lot of TSN/Strat players are 50-something guys like me who grew up in the 60's.

So, I'd really like to see a 60's mystery card game like the 70's, 80's, and 90's games. I think it would be huge. Any chance of it happening ??

Regards,

COL Ricardo "Rick" Nicol, US Army
US Forces - Afghanistan

You aren't the first to ask. I think some have brought up a 50's/60's mix game. I think the response was they didn't think there would be enough interest . . . I'd like to see older sets like this. I'd like to learn more about older eras and I think this would be a good way. Baseball is a great game . . . it is weird when i think about the old west with people people killing each other in gunfights . . . and baseball was being played! I'm in favor of a 60's league.

Here are the problems and the realities of what you are asking...

1. the All-Time Great series and the 200X games are the true money generators for SOM online, especially ATG, not the mystery card games. So from a priority standpoint its way down the list
2. correct me if I'm wrong but many sets in the 60's are still not super advanced. All game play here is based upon super advanced play and thus would require SOM to develop cards for those years which I feel safe to say is much more of an undertaking than SOM would want to invest. The 90's game was much easier given the fact all years already have superadvanced cards

In reality, not to burst your bubble, chances would be at best remote. Also, I would venture to say at best you would see something like that in 3-4 years given the extra it would require first. As popular as many here might think, its still about what sells best and thats not another mystery card format

JMC makes some good points, but I would much rather play a 60s mystery card game than either ATG (played once) or any of the 200x series (never have played). Let's do it.

I'd be good for 4 or 5 5-packs of 50s/60s

I'll take it a step further...

How 'bout we go one step further...and take ALL the ATG cards and make a mystery game?!? Think of it...ALL your favorites!!! Throw the mystery aspect in there and we have the ultimate equalizer! More people might be willing to play an ATG mystery game just for the simple fact that it equalizes the playing field somewhat. Not knowing if you're gonna get that Babe Ruth card that's worth $15M in a $100M league...or spend big at all for that matter...maybe more people would join the Barnstormer's Tournament knowing that they have more of an equal chance to win just like the "big" names who "know" the cards and try to draft the same cards EACH round....

Or...if they decide to go with a 50's/60's package...put it together with the 70's, 80's & 90's and make it like ATG 6 with the seperate subsets of leagues(i.e. AL/NL, db/pre/post/exp)...a decade could be added each year kinda like ATG gets upgraded....

I know this would take a lot of work...especially finding "bad" cards for certain players...but...OH MAN would it be worth it!!! Well..for me anyway... :P

Great ideas, I like it! (70's, 80's & 90's and make it like ATG 6 with all the mystrey cards). This would be the mystrey card lovers ATG VI

If we can't go that route, I like the 50/60 mystery card game.

Count me in

I have not played one ATG team, and have no intention. I've only done a few 90's because league-mates brought me in. Frankly, the 90's always seemed foolish to me; we have the 80's and combined with the decade just ended make a good sandwich around the 90's.

I'd even settle for a combo 50's/60's

I only did a 200x once each year for just 2-3 years to have fun with the card set. No fun without the mystery year.

And for the colonel who posted, I hail from those days as well (first set was 1970, then I started buying used basic game sets way back when)

Or how about a 40's war era game? I would love to see what Pete Gray's outfield throwing arm rating would be.
