Worst Relievers

Postby jsam9801 » Tue Jun 13, 2006 10:35 am

Granted, I am a .75 reliever scrub collector :D , but has anyone ever had a good full season from the following:

1. Barry "don't call me Odell" Jones
2. Jeff Dedmon
3. Jim Acker
4. Keith Atherton

Also, Steve Crawford, Chuck Rainey and Dickie Noles are even worse. Anyone ever have any luck with these scrubs :| ? Any other relievers that offer absolutely no upside?

the most luck i had was with barry jones
Jones, B. '90 3 wins 1 Save 64.0 IP 3.52 1.61

Jones' 90 card is serviceable, and '91 card might be ok if the dice roll in the right manner

I have only ever finished a season with one of those guys, that being Jeff Dedmon. He did just fine on these teams:

87 Dedmon - 4.18 ERA, 1.23 WHIP in 23 IP

88 Dedmon - 2.84 ERA, 1.13 WHIP in 38 IP

86 Dedmon - 3.26 ERA, 1.09 WHIP in 19 IP

Ken Schrom

Postby hechojazz » Tue Jun 13, 2006 12:16 pm

I just got a great season out of Schrom, using him solely in relief:

Pitchers (11)
Name T End. W L S IP H ER BB
Schrom, K. R S6/R3 4 3 11 37.1 31 12 21

SO ERA WHIP Salary
16 2.89 1.39 .75M

HAL kept using him as my closer down the stretch. A nice surprise.

I am playing a season where Mark Williamson is pitching very well for me... 1.59 ERA, 1.12 WHIP. A couple of his years are good, just be careful about HR's, better in pitcher's parks.

I like to try Donnie Moore every chance I get... sometimes he works, sometimes he gets jumped on early and often. I guess there's no such thing as a "consistent" 0.75M reliever, yes?

...that's why they only cost .75mil...but it sure is fine when a flyer on a cheapie works out. I love Rudy Law as an OF replacement - in my last league he became my regular DH against RHP, just tearing it up! I couldn't believe it.

In one of my leagues, an owner has probably one of the absolute best 0.75M values of all time... Mike Young.

Mike Young's Amazing Season

Through 87 games, Young is hitting .312, OBA of .397, and slugging .700
He has 28 HR's and 77 RBI's... with just 71 games played. He's 2nd in the league in HR's and RBI's. For 0.75M!!!

I can't even count how many times I have gone to Odell Jones late in a season when I'm scrounging for a relief upgrade... He has performed decently for me a few times...

I've had a number of good seasons from Acker and a couple from Dedmon. You never know. Even Farmer has given me some excellent stretch runs. None for a full season as I've always turned to these guys at the end, but good enough.
