[quote:ba2d9399ee]The notion of Kent Tekulve playing third base creates an interesting mental image for anyone who actually saw him play.
I'm thinking of this tall, gaunt, righthander with glasses and a horizontally striped Pirates cap swooping in on a slow roller like Ichabod Crane, long arms and legs flying in all directions, then bending down from on high, gathering the ball up and slinging it sidearm to the befuddled first-baseman, his knuckles almost scraping the ground as he released the ball.
I'd pay to see that in real life.[/quote:ba2d9399ee]
I had a great conversation with someone on this board this past summer in a private message that had actually been to the SF game where Tekulve was used as a LF option for the Pirates.
The short version of the story is that Chuck Tanner wanted to play match ups in the final inning of the game so he put Tekulve in LF and brought in a different reliever to face someone. (Probably lefty vs. lefty situation.) Tekulve actually caught a flyball in LF that inning and the spectacle of the eyewitness was hilarious.
Just found the boxscore on retrosheet. Woohoo! Hopefully the formatting looks ok. I'll post the pbp at the end of the boxscore for the inning. If the formatting looks like crap go to http://www.retrosheet.org/ and look up the 1979 game Pirates @ Giants on September 1st. Enjoy!
