I'll say this...Less than 1% of any theme league based upon franchises that I have been in have not had the Reds as its champ or in the finals...If you play a league where a team has Bench, Rose, Morgan, Foster, Perez, Griffey, Geronimo, Concepcion, Tolan, Seaver, Gullet, etc. most of the time you will be playing for 2nd place...sorry but no franchise outside of the Red Sox comes close to that type of roster as its core

I was going to point out that I won such a theme league with the Dodgers. But when I looked it up, I saw that I beat the Reds in the finals!

There are a couple things you could do about the Reds. First, you could play 1970, 71, 78, or 79. Morgan came over in 72, and 78, 79 you've got Seaver and a few terrible pitchers. The problem with playing those seasons is that there aren't enough players. For example, the 79 Reds have only 5 pitchers with cards in the 70s game. So, there would be a lot of free agents.

Second, you could put in a free agent rule to even things out. For example, the franchise with the highest salary (combined total of all players plus 0.75 for fill-ins, for example, a 2nd catcher for the Reds). And the other 11 teams get to draft free agents to fit under the salary cap.

By the way, I once played a franchise league with the Reds and I didn't make the playoffs. I got a lot of bad years.

Just checked the season I did this and the division winners were Orioles, Yankees, and Dodgers. The Red Sox were the wild card. The Dodgers won 100 games but got beat in the finals by the Orioles. For the record the Reds were 73-89 and finished in last in their division mostly because the pitching was last in the league with a 5+ team ERA.

Just checked my records...I played 9 theme leagues based upon franchises whether overall or single seasons'. The stats...

Finishes for the Reds franchise...
4 Championships
1 Finals loss
2 Semi-finals loss
2 No playoff appearances...one was a league where I beat them in the division and they didn't get the WC, the other was a league where they were using 1979 rosters which did not include Rose, Morgan, or Perez

I'd say that's a pretty good record...even including 79 which levels the field a lot they won 4 titles in 9 tries and lost 1 other finals...so unless you can get them in the right year they will usually be right there for the ring!

The other dominant team of that decade would be the A's. Where are they in all of this?

Well let's just crank it up and get this league started. I'll get the ball rolling by taking . . . . the Reds! :o

I was in the theme for the 71, 74 & 77 seasons (it looks like you were only in one of those, jmc) and:

Champs: Dodgers (71), Reds (74), Phillies (77)
Finalists: Reds (71), Red Sox (74), Dodgers (77)
Semis: Orioles (71,74), Cubs (71,74), Astros (77), Royals (77)

LMBombers, the A's went 73-89 in '71, 84-78 in '74 (due to my mismangement) and undrafted in '77.

What do you think Soup Zahn, is this kind of what you had in mind? By the way, welcome to the group! Hopefully you'll love the mystery card game as much as the rest of us and we'll start seeing a lot of you!

I keep hoping someone is going to throw out a year and start a signup sheet!

What do we need to so to get this league going? I would be in for a team.
