Here is my first team.

Opening night was fun! I got a sweep on the road including shutouts by Dennis Martinez and Fernando Valenzuela. And I unleashed the monster that is Mark Parent! 4 HRs and 9 RBIs.

[quote:abdb358b48="Outta Leftfield"]Thanks for all of the good suggestions. Rickey, Chipper, Bonds, Ryno, Pedro...they're all tempting--and the more expensive guys would be attainable if I go cheap somewhere. Does anyone like Walker?

My original cheap was/is Jody Reed at 2B: 1.28M for a 2e9 at 2B. Might stick with that, though, again, Ryno is tempting.

One thing I'm contemplating is a cheap platoon at 3b...something like Mike Blowers and Jack Howell. With luck, that could handle 3B for very little and leave cash for other needs. That might be a way to afford Bonds, though in an 80M league, he might still be a stretch.

Further thoughts would be welcome.[/quote:abdb358b48]

After looking at a zillion cards my strategy was to get one stud pitcher and work around him with cheap starters that had one great year, hoping to get lucky with a couple of them. That freed up more cash for some sluggers. I looked at some cheap 2B2 guys but Whitaker has some really nice cards vs RHP. I'm platooning him with Gallego who is a 2. There are a lot of nice platoon options at 3B, but I was lucky enough to get Thome. I would probably be tempted on Bonds, but gosh he's expensive in an 80mil league. Sandberg or Chipper next. Rickey is still great, but doesn't stand out as much with the 90's group IMO unless you want his speed. Lots of guys have crazy OBP and Rickey loses his CF eligibility which makes him more valuable in the 80's than the 90's. If your looking for a nice hitter under 5mil, look at Stairs. Four really good cards.

It really seems that a 5 man starting rotation is a much more viable option in the 90's game vs. the 70s or 80s. There are some bargains for pitchers (especially non * starters).

I have Reed doing very well on one of my teams. I am also going with Frye on another team. I think they will both be very good options.

I also decided to go with the Blowers/Howell platoon in a league. It wasn't to save money, it is in the 24 team league and all the good 3B were taken, so I am trying them out as a platoon. I have high hopes.

My good team:

My not so good team:

My theme league team (I have the Rangers and the Padres):

My 24 team league team:

What is going in the last one is that I had a lot of extra money, and there wasn't anything to spend it on in the FA pool, so I brought in all the SP's I could fit on the roster and I will see who has good cards. Once the season gets going, there won't be any pitching to pick up off the FA, so I wanted to have them on my roster to start.

Hey's its great to hear from all these 70s and 80s buddies!

Waivers is at 5PM today (Tuesday) so my updated team will be visible then. Veteran nevdully has the first pick to my 2nd, so it will be interesting to see what he does. I sort of suspect we have the same #1 player in mind. Time will tell.

Thanks LMB! Nev took Bonds with the first pick, but I got my top two...Chipper and Pedro. This created a cash crunch at corner OF, so my thought is to try out cheap platoon options there until something clicks.

Lots of good talent still on the table, including both high priced guys and cheap guys with a good year or two. A lot more players in the 90s, it seems.

I've got a couple going right now.

http://fantasygames.sportingnews.com/stratomatic/team/team_other.html?user_id=289203

Having trouble finding help at the top of the order. I just grabbed Everett.
Not sure which Lofton card I've got, but he's obviously under-performing.

And...

Just grabbed Durham for top of the lineup help. The HGH hasn't kicked in for Giambi yet.
