I'll be gone for a few hours this morning/afternoon. I've PM'd my 3rd base pick to Toisan so we can finish up the 3rd base position.

Are we still going?

Postby rookssa1958 » Sun Mar 05, 2006 1:47 pm

I guess we could have used a few tweaks.

It shouldn't be random order, it should be a set order so that the order for shortstop is reversed for second, third for first, RF for CF, LF for DH, 1st SP for 2nd SP, RP for catcher, and you should have to play the person in the spot you drafted him for (except Yount, he should be SS, no one uses him in CF)

That way, everyone would be guaranteed to get a least one good player for the toughest to fill positons.

But the deal is, here we are drafting away, but no one is playing today, so whassup?

[quote:44c3cf722d="Jablowmi"]I think we have to be careful with the overlap, as some guys could qualify at both SS and 3B.[/quote:44c3cf722d]

Jablowmi didn't heed his own advice with his pick of Smalley at SS. Smalley is an illegal pick and should either be changed or the SS picks should be held up at that point and Smalley should still be able to be picked in the 3B round.

You're right, LM. I was thrown by the Doran pick. We should put a hold on the SS draft until the 3B thing is done. If someone wants Smalley, I'll take another SS.

i enjoyed this draft idea...few tweeks are needed...players should only elgiable for the first postion listed...and as part of the lottery....each team should get a chance to name the a postion to be drafted...and they select first in that round...and last in the next....i am going to try this as one of my five seasons to the championship series with the 2006 cards....1st series is al only....2nd series nl only....3rd....all teams....4th will be the new postion draft....and fifth will be a two - teams only theme...you eran points with each season results...top finisher receives a free season...

there is no perfect system.
You could tweak this to possibly make it more "fair" but less fun. If in the 2B round you had to pick who would play 2B it would be pretty boring and predictable. As is its pretty predicatbale. The list of best 2Bs by a vet and a rookie are not going to be far off. Screwing around in the early rounds is going to make the later rounds more exciting.

You can say that you may draft a person based on its first position but then making an exception for Yount would be silly I think. There are several players who play positions other than the first listed. Ill play Dawson in CF over anyone. Corner OFs can go to either corner. Guys like Jack Clark who shouldnt be in the field can "play" any of 3 positions. and I have no idea where I am going to try and hide Pedro Guerrero. Yount, of course is the most extreme example.

Do not let those stars on the side fool you-I am no vet. I have not won made it to the second round of playoffs. Nevertheless, I already know exactly where I rank the top 10 guys at each position. If I could only draft guys withthe proper position listed first and be required to use him at that position, this draft would be pretty boring. I can discuss my personal rankings at each position all day long butto be required to draft people in that exact order wouldnt be too much fun.

Dont get me wrong I think this format without tweaks is fair-everyone is playing by the same rules. And interesting choices have to be made. I personally had an easy choice to make. If the guy ahead of me took Sandberg, I was going to take Doran. But if I had to choose between Ripken or Reynolds or Sandberg I am not sure what I would have done.

My gut feeling is that if you wanted to make this format more "fair" -and by that I mean letting the guy who picks 2B for his round get Sandberg, then you should do the first pick of each round, then the second pick of each round, then the third, etc.... That way Each person who picks SP or OF gets a first pick and you still have interesting choices-i.e. you can pick Brett under 1B if the guy who picked 3B took Schmidt.

The one thing that might need tweaking is the pick order. I am drafting before the same person each round it seems. I think it should be more serpentine so that haldf the time I pick before person x and the other half the time after person X.
