March Madness Round 3 - Bracket 2 - REVISED LEAGUE

Our Mystery Card games - The '70s Game, Back to the '80s, Back to the '90s

With some tight races that look like they will come down to the wire, I went back (quite a way back actually) to re-post the RULES. In there you will find the tie-breaker information:

RULES

AUTODRAFT

1st ROUND

Teams will be placed in brackets in the field of 36 or 48. The brackets will be seeded as follows: if we have 48 (4 brackets of 12), I will take the top 12 from the TSN manager rankings and seed them as follows: league 1 - manager 1, 8 and 9 (E, C and W); league 2 - manager 2, 7 and 10; league 3 - manager 3, 6 and 11; and league 4 - manager 4, 5 and 12. If we have 36 (3 brackets of 12), I will seed only the top 9 in a similar fashion. Then, we'll allow the remaining players on the list to fill out the remainder of the bracket.

2nd ROUND

All playoff teams will advance automatically to the next round. If the field is 48, 5 additional teams in each bracket - determined by best record (tiebreakers below) - will also advance (giving us a field of 36).

Once we have a field of 36 (or if we start at 36), the four playoff teams will advance along with 4 additional teams in each bracket - determined by best record (giving us a field of 24). The field will be re-seeded after each round, not based on manager ratings, but on record in the previous bracket. Playoff teams will get higher "status."

FINAL

The eight playoff teams will advance along with 2 additional teams from each bracket to give us the final 12. Again, the teams will be seeded based on performance in the field of 24.

TIEBREAKERS

1. Head to head
2. Run differential
3. Pick 3 lottery

STADIUMS

Parks will not be designated, but a different park must be chosen by each manager in each round. Players in a single bracket can have the same park.

PRIZES

Certainly optional, but it would be cool if we could purchase a 5 pack for the winner. We'd only need to collect $2/3 from each player and I'd provide my Paypal account.

Unfortunately, I recall the above not happening despite my remarks to re-rank based on bracket performance.

The response had been - it's just like the NCAA - you're ranked #1 entering the tourney - you keep it all the way through.

This league is killing me. One day I have a five game lead on Semper and then I get swept by him scoring 17 runs total. Then I keep losing and Semper takes a one game lead. Last night I sweep him and score 50 runs without Nokes and Brooks.

How can anyone figure out the pitching. The other day Semper said he had one of Haas' better years. I had him and thought the same based on early results and then he just kept on getting bombed and giving up homers. It seems like most of the time when you pick up a pitcher he starts out well and later morphs into Chuck Rainey.

I don't think I've ever kept a pitcher that gave up over 50 homers but Wegman's my best guy with 21 wins and 53 homers allowed. The rest of the starters would have given up more than 50 if they had enough innings. Rob Murphy's stats seem to defy logic after 144 games. Maybe HAL only uses him against bad righties. He still won't use Gott as a closer vs. righties or for that matter put him in a game.

I'm also superstitious about posting and everything else. I wonder if my team does better when I look at the scores late at night or early in the morning. Should I look at one game from this league and then check my 2006 teams or do I look at them all at once. I might start keeping stats on this.

I've had moderate success going to the homepage, calculating the maximum amount of wins my current teams could get... and then after covering my right eye with my left hand clicking refresh. Works better in the morning than at night.

The best success that I've enjoyed (over a .750 win rate) is when I make little dolls during the day, and after putting the opposing teams name on it...I stick pins and needles into it while listening to Bob Marley music.

Contrary to popular belief...sacrificing chickens DOES NOT WORK and can actually get you into trouble with the A.S.P.C.A.

I've sacrificed plenty of chicken in front of this computer with no complaints from the A.S.P.C.A. My wife's a different story though.

Got Lucky?

Postby Semper Gumby » Sun Oct 15, 2006 1:38 pm

Rigged .... doubtful.

I reviewed our earlier series which I may have had a slight advantage in the home / away series by 2 games.

It has to do with dice and HAL's engine -

With two evenly matched Kingdome teams, it seemed a little strange that one would significantly outscore the other in a three game series. In our other match ups, closer games -

Oddly, HAL torched McClure who had been lights out up to know - he yielded some 7 walks in 2 innings - how does that happen?

I think HAL's logic rewards the home team more so than we care to recognize -

Under the CD-ROM version, the "home park advantage" setting forces a statistical advantage of approximately 10 points on the batting average for the home team. This is the traditional major league difference between batting averages at home and on the road.

When you add that to how we design our teams around a park's effects, this difference is huge.

Again, when you have two evenly matched Kingdome teams slugging it out (you had better hitting / me pitching) ... this makes the difference in a close game and a blow out.

That 8 losing streak didn't help! Thought I had the inside track on making the finals, now we're scrambling again!

Maybe it's the karma of cheesing through the first two rounds on the last night that is coming back to haunt me!

Good luck, it's gonna be a shootout to make the final six...

I sure hope you're right about 84 wins. I might be able to eek out 5 more. 85 might be tough.

I hope you're right about your team's chances! :D

You lucked out with some better hitting cards but let see if my Kingdome pitching crew can make your prediction come true.
