It's called humor. Generally used to lighten the mood of a topic that has become a little heavy.

You guys are really swaying the opinion of the people who make the decisions with regards to the mystery card concept. Keep buying 80's teams and the revenue made will speak to the higher ups as to whether we make another mystery card game!

I apologize to 1crazycanuck and anyone else I may have offended by referring to some posts as "sound[ing] like evangelical Christians." Perhaps I should have just referred to you guys as "cultists" or "zealots" or something. Really, I was just trying to be snarky, and no offense was meant towards hardliners of the evangelical Christian persuasion. If any is taken by anyone I, once again, say "I'm sorry."

All I meant to say is that sometimes you guys go a little crazy over the msytery card. I love '80's and play it more than any other Strat game, but I think it's silly to belittle the other games. All have their difficulties and, in fact, only in '80's can you say "Well, you just have to get good cards." For all its complexity, the game does depend on a certain amount of luck.

That said, I'd welcome another mystery card game-- 70's?, 60's?-- and I hope there'll be one coming in the next few months. So, Larry, thanks for the encouragement!

I too tried the '69 game and found it limiting.
But I have the same complaint about 2005. Two teams, one championship, the second team knocked out in the first round of the playoffs, one credit left and I'm looking for the message board that will let me ask Strat to convert that to a Back to the '80s.
And if I win more credits in '69, currently in first with half a season to go, I'll flip those.
I will not play any more single season games.
However, I relish the idea of a Back to the '60s. Imagine the possibilities of getting the '61 Mantle and Maris cards!

Meanwhile, I put a 1969 team together early this afternoon, joined a public league as the third team, and I'm still the third team in as of 10:00 eastern time tonight. That's not a good sign, considering my nephew and I put an ATGII team together earlier today, joined a public league as the fifth team and we're now waiting for just one more team to join.

There's something wrong in 1969-land. You never wait that long for a public league to fill in 80's or 2005. 1969 is not doing well. It's too bad because I'm old enough to remember all the players and it would be fun to play with the cards.

Back to the 1970's is coming soon, I think.

I'm old enough to remember the players too. My earliest baseball memory is the '61 World Series and McCovey lining out to Bobby Richardson to end the series.
But if I draft Tom Tresh, I want a chance to get one of his good years, not his last season.
I want to use Whitey Ford just because he was Whity Ford and Yaz during his triple crown year.
Jim Bouton when he was a fire-baller, not a knuckleball wanna-be.
Koufax and Drysdale.
And give me a chance to mold my team if I get off to a bad start or grab Rod Kanehl just because he was a Met.
The problem with the '69 game is that it is the same as any 200X game, but with entire generations oblivious to who Marvellous Marv Thornbury was.
Back to the '60s would grab those who want to manage a team, not merely check up on it from time to time.

Other ways of using the mystery card

Postby BRIANCHIVIS » Thu Nov 03, 2005 4:17 pm

If the mystery card idea is catching on with the decisionmakers, we should talk about how it could be used.

I think it would be kind of cool to have a something like all of the HOF cards put out by Strat; each player in the HOF would be represented by five cards or something like that.

Another idea is to have random players represented each time you join the ATG league, and each random player would be represented by mystery card. That would put some competition into getting the players you need, but you would have to join a league before you submit a draft card.

What other ideas can you think of?

I would prefer the mystery card games to stick to decades like "Back to the 70s" or 60s. HOFers are just going to have awesome years every year. That is too much like the ATG game.
