Who Are You?

[quote:f5416748a8]Well, who are you? (Who are
you? Who, who, who, who?)
I really wanna know[/quote:f5416748a8]

Unusually quiet day today in the market but it is early yet.

[list:f5416748a8][b:f5416748a8]OLD BOSS[/b:f5416748a8]
Cowens, Al (3 games and done)
Schatzeder, Dan (2 outings and done)

[b:f5416748a8]NEW BOSS[/b:f5416748a8]
Matthews, Gary
Deshaies, Jim [/list:u:f5416748a8]

Ain't too many new cards left in the free agent pile so we're going to observe some gripping along the way as teams contemplate whether the former owner knew something when they dropped that card.

Given what I've seen so far with the injuries and what nots, I'm going to be bullish with a replacement or two.

:P

Semper,

Why don't you join us in 30203? We are looking for two more good men or women to fill out the league and draft this evening.

Game 33 in the books and we're now two series away from decision time

[list:5b3755d0e7][b:5b3755d0e7]OLD BOSS[/b:5b3755d0e7]

Lansford, Carney
Fraser, Willie
John, Tommy
Sanderson, Scott
Melvin, Bob
Leary, Tim
Heaton, Neal
Hall, Mel
Gibson, Kirk
Burgmeier, Tom

[b:5b3755d0e7]NEW BOSS[/b:5b3755d0e7]

Wallach, Tim
Spillner, Dan
Black, Bud
Candiotti, Tom
Trevino, Alex
Swift, Bill
Schmidt, Mike (mike wasn't unemployed long)
Shirley, Bob
[/list:u:5b3755d0e7]

I'm wondering if adding [b:5b3755d0e7]Mike Schmidt [/b:5b3755d0e7]becomes the steal of the season next to the small picks of Gene Garber and Jerry Remy.

Mike did have .892 OPS against RHPs but struggled against the southpaws with a Mendoza like .609 OPS.

Of course, he did have 5 HRs versus RHPs which makes his card tempting

[b:bdb61f9067]OLD BOSS[/b:bdb61f9067]
Sisk, Doug
Anderson, Allan
Candiotti, Tom (never saw an inning)
Reynolds, R.J.
Paciorek, Tom
Petry, Dan
Bradley, Phil
Lezcano, Sixto (injury done sixto in!)
Seitzer, Kevin
Singleton, Ken

[b:bdb61f9067]NEW BOSS[/b:bdb61f9067]
Allen, Neil
Lea, Charlie
Anderson, Allan
Morris, Jack
Forsch, Bob
Carter, Joe (here is to getting one of his Cleveland Indian days!)
Singleton, Ken (perhaps a change of view will do him good)
Brouhard, Mark
Pasqua, Dan
Barfield, Jesse
McRae, Hal (perhaps a change of view will do him good too)

Tonights match-up between [b:bdb61f9067]Dallas Bruisers[/b:bdb61f9067] and my [b:bdb61f9067]Jarheads[/b:bdb61f9067] will be a fun box score to read in the morning.

We'll see how my pitching crew can hold the door against the onslaught of the Dallas bats - with its league leading 98 homeruns at the 36 game mark. Dallas' homerun mark is close to 20 more than the #2 team and Kingdome inhabitant.

Perhaps I can ask to see if the bats are corked?

Luckily, he hits 3 times as many homeruns at home than on the road

KEEPING HOPE ALIVE is the mantra in my bullpen tonight.

Limited Rudder Steer at the 1/4 Turn

Postby Semper Gumby » Sun Feb 08, 2009 10:53 pm

With the high number of earlier free agent cycling, the teams had a limited fresh free agent pool at the Game 39 mark to help improve their chances going forward.

Not too many surprises but you know some owners just felt better dealing with the devil that they had versus the one they didn't know

[list:9e1389c0ad][b:9e1389c0ad]Notable drops[/b:9e1389c0ad]

Swan, Craig
Singleton, Ken (one series tryout fails to impress)
Downing, Brian (didn't catch and injury reveals blah)
Valenzuela, Fernando (may have been last chance with the league)
Lynn, Fred (injury killed his chances despite being ranked in a few offensive categories)

[b:9e1389c0ad]My own[/b:9e1389c0ad]

Ben Ogilivie (one of his .240 BA season cards)
Lee Smith (casualty of needing cash to spend on free agents)[/list:u:9e1389c0ad]

Why break something if it works, right?

Well, I decided to ignore conventional wisdom as I pondered Ben Ogilivie's fate. Absent an injury roll, Ben's G39 stats had him far below even his worse season as well as the other batters (oddly, half his hits were HRs). With his average glove looming in LF and league leading 8 GIDPs, he needed to go but the LF pool looked shallow.

After looking at the pool, I relucantly took [b:9e1389c0ad]Willie Wilson [/b:9e1389c0ad]and the potential that he could do no worse than Ben with the bat and increase my chance of an OF assist in LF.

Of course, I needed to find a few more coins and [b:9e1389c0ad]Lee Smith [/b:9e1389c0ad]had been walking the tightwire with his closing hysterics even though he had a great WHIP.

Now I still have a few dollars to spend and could use another hitter to squire away for when [b:9e1389c0ad]Bobby Bonilla [/b:9e1389c0ad]takes a 15 game vacation.

Perhaps this plays out as the free agent move to break away from the division or come slamming back to earth. After last nights embarrassment against [b:49a53a7009]Humm Baby [/b:49a53a7009](could I strand more runners despite a Hassey's pop gun of an arm?) :(

With the free agent pool less than desirable, I had next to zero options besides [b:49a53a7009]Willie Wilson.[/b:49a53a7009] After reviewing his six game tenure with the previous owner, I recognized Willie cracked one homerun versus RHP so I'm speculating he ain't using years 2 and 4 (arguably his two off years even though year 2 has a high OPS but needs a fair dose of LHP)

For one series (at least), Willie surpassed Ben's 9 game totals for hits and RBIs to include stealing a base.

On the other hand, I'm not sure if the loss of [b:49a53a7009]Lee Smith [/b:49a53a7009] doomed the bullpen that allowed Baby to snatch victory from the jaws of defeat.

Seeing that I stranded some 13 batters in one game, I may need to change the base stealing settings to force HAL include more Billy ball.

Tonight I visit the Kingdome and see whether my pitchers can keep Bruisers from turning this game into a softball match between King and His Court and Saint Mary's School for the Blind.

Bill James?

Postby Semper Gumby » Tue Feb 10, 2009 10:08 pm

According to TSN's expanded standings, I've got an unlucky team

For once, I agree with TSN / HAL's assessment

Now that I've zero'd [b:9ff220e12e]Pete Rose's [/b:9ff220e12e]card to his first two years. The question becomes how do I get Charlie Hustle a few more at bats when I know [b:9ff220e12e]Bobby Bonilla's [/b:9ff220e12e]1992 season card has a .860 OPS versus RHPs - compared to Pete's .781 (1978) or .858 (1979)

Busy Day in the Neighborhood

Postby Semper Gumby » Wed Feb 11, 2009 9:10 pm

What a day in the league

We had it all going on among the owners - trades and a spike in roster moves.

[list:1ab4920d81]
[b:1ab4920d81]OLD BOSS [/b:1ab4920d81]

Heep, Danny
McRae, Hal
Easler, Mike
Pena, Tony
Bowa, Larry
Hurst, Bruce
Parrish, Lance
Show, Eric
Lemon, Chet (dropped with .900 OPS with 190 PAs) :?
Matthews, Gary
Viola, Frank
Roenicke, Gary (part of trade then dropped)
Camp, Rick (part of trade then dropped)
Fletcher, Scott
Washington, U.L.
Vandeberg, Ed (part of trade then dropped)
Dawson, Andre (interesting transaction see below)
Mahler, Rick
Leach, Terry
Pasqua, Dan

[b:1ab4920d81]NEW BOSS[/b:1ab4920d81]

Gross, Wayne
Lemon, Chet
Law, Rudy
Berryhill, Damon
Dunston, Shawon
Darwin, Danny
Dempsey, Rick
Niekro, Joe
Dawson, Andre
Lezcano, Sixto
Lea, Charlie
Fletcher, Scott
McGaffigan, Andy
Leach, Rick
Franco, Julio
Cowens, Al
Bass, Kevin
Dotson, Richard
Martinez, Tippy
Aikens, Willie[/list:u:1ab4920d81]

[b:1ab4920d81]And a trade that really served as a bunch of drops and a nice grab for a bystander owner.[/b:1ab4920d81]

[list:1ab4920d81]KINGDOME TEAM traded:
Ripken Jr., Cal [b:1ab4920d81](BA: .283 / OPS: .826) [/b:1ab4920d81]
Duncan, Mariano [b:1ab4920d81](PAs: 4 / BA: .500)[/b:1ab4920d81]
Camp, Rick [b:1ab4920d81](IP: 37 / ERA: 7.20 / WHIP: 1.80)[/b:1ab4920d81]
Vandeberg, Ed [b:1ab4920d81](IP: 25 / ERA: 9.24 / WHIP: 2.21)[/b:1ab4920d81]

RIVERFRONT TEAM for:
Roenicke, Gary [b:1ab4920d81](PA: 26 / OPS: .496) [/b:1ab4920d81]
Smalley Jr., Roy [b:1ab4920d81](PA: 193/ OPS: .682) [/b:1ab4920d81]
Smith, Dave [b:1ab4920d81](IP: 24 / ERA: 2.25 / WHIP: 1.17)[/b:1ab4920d81][/list:u:1ab4920d81]

Shortly after the trade, the RIVERFRONT TEAM then dropped

[b:1ab4920d81]Camp
Vandeberg[/b:1ab4920d81]

And then [b:1ab4920d81]Andre Dawson[/b:1ab4920d81] [OPS: .665] for Al Cowens

With the KINGDOME TEAM dropping Gary Roenicke (replaced with Scott Fletcher) and the fired [b:1ab4920d81]Chet Lemon [/b:1ab4920d81]to acquire [b:1ab4920d81]Andre Dawson [/b:1ab4920d81]

So, let us rework the trade as the events settled

KINGDOME trades [b:1ab4920d81]Ripken[/b:1ab4920d81] and [b:1ab4920d81]Duncan[/b:1ab4920d81] to RIVERFRONT for [b:1ab4920d81]Smalley [/b:1ab4920d81]and [b:1ab4920d81]D Smith [/b:1ab4920d81]and [b:1ab4920d81]Andre Dawson[/b:1ab4920d81] (in a round about way) with the COUNTY team snagging [b:1ab4920d81]Chet Lemon[/b:1ab4920d81] using an underperforming [b:1ab4920d81]Mike Easler [/b:1ab4920d81] (OPS: .805) and [b:1ab4920d81]Hal McRae[/b:1ab4920d81]

Clearly, the KINGDOME team valued [b:1ab4920d81]D Smith[/b:1ab4920d81] much higher than the offense / defense provided by [b:1ab4920d81]Cal Ripken [/b:1ab4920d81]. On the other, I'm wonder how much will Smalley at SS reduce the team's overall double play ability over the course of the season.

I will keep my part of the bargain (over thinking the moves) so long as you keep your part of the bargain (scouring the free agent market for great deals and cutting loose underperforming cards) -okay?

We had some action last night didn't we?

You bet - let us take a look at last night's box score against a division leading team (HAL dorked me on the scheduling as I've played six straight series against the four monster teams) :x

In reviewing the box scores this morning, I see this gem:

[quote:861496fddf]*** TOP OF INNING 2 ***
0 J.Clark 4 Fly Out b-0
1 T.Pendleton 4 Line Out b-0
2 P.Rose 2 Home Run b-H
2 L.Moseby 4 Triple b-0[/quote:861496fddf]

Now I have the team's controls set as "don't you dare think about it - keep your big fat butt on the base"!

So, why does HAL think Lloyd Moseby is going to stretch a triple into a inside the park homerun with Dave Parker and Gorman Thomas in the OF?

Probably the same reason the Bill James stats tell me I should have a few more wins than I actually have -

Now back to the league - which keeps me stocking my desk with pencils and erasers for all the line-up changes.

Rather than cover the add/drop list, we're just going to focus on cutting the $$$$ position players loose and the resulting feeding frenzy.

[i:861496fddf][b:861496fddf]Let us reset the situation[/b:861496fddf][/i:861496fddf]

An Olympic based veteran owner cuts bait on [b:861496fddf]Dave Winfield [/b:861496fddf](PA: 200+ OPS: .669) and hires [b:861496fddf]Kevin McReynolds [/b:861496fddf]

Another veteran owner thinks Winfield's performance isn't indicative of the crappy season and cuts [b:861496fddf]Tim Raines [/b:861496fddf] (PA: 190 OPS: .716) free to add Winny

Only to feed another veteran owner's best day to drop a really bad [b:861496fddf]George Foster[/b:861496fddf] card along (surprisingly) [b:861496fddf]Willie Randolph [/b:861496fddf] (OPS: .698) for [b:861496fddf]Tim Raines[/b:861496fddf].

I can't wait to see who cuts bait to fish [b:861496fddf]Willie Randolph[/b:861496fddf] out of the free agent garbage bin
