The A's finished 84-78 and in 2nd place behind the 90-72 Yankees (me) in the league I was in.

I found the rules for the old single season franchise league:

For those who have not played in this league before, we do a pick 3, low to high, selecting teams from '77. If the team's roster has more than 25 players, you need to cut down before the season starts. If your team has less than 25 players, you get free agent picks, $2 per pick, which you can aggregate as you like (so if you are short 3 hitters, you have $6 to spend and can spend up to $4.50 on one hitter, and then pick two $0.75 players). Free agents are those players from '77 whose teams were not selected. Players with more than one team go to the team with most PAs for hitters and most IP for pitchers (therefore, in '77, the Reds have dibs over the Mets for Seaver, and Kingman goes to the Mets, followed by the Padres, Angels and Yankees in that order). Unlimited trades but no other roster moves after the start of the season. If you get George Brett's bad year, you are stuck with him. The league will be $200 Million, DH, No waivers.

There will be a LIVE draft in this forum of players on undrafted team's rosters to fill our teams rosters as needed to have a legal 25 man roster (10 pitchers - 5 SP and 5 that can RP, 2 catchers, etc).

For instance if the team you draft only has 22 players you can then live draft 3 players that average no more than 2M each (6M total to spend on your 3 players). Even if you have 25 players on your roster but only 1 catcher you would get to live draft another catcher.

Divisions will be set up by total salary of available players (Highest four in East, next 4 highest in central, etc).

Okay, Soup here

I’m a newbie full of un-informed exuberance but I started the thread so I’m back to speak up.

After looking at the rosters in the 70s game, I don’t think there are enough players for some franchises to field a entire team. So below are the geographical combo teams. See what you think. It was not as easy as you might think.

Since the Toronto and Seattle show up in 77, they’re not included.

Here’s my thought on some points made.

1: Who gets what teams? ... For me its all about who I know. I grew up in So Cal, the fun would be managing the Dodgers & Angels, and I think others would feel the same. So you really need to be able to pick your own team.

2: The Reds are so good. ... Maybe, but they are now coupled with the Tigers. Plus, couldn’t a salary cap level the diamond. Can all of the Big Red Machine fit under $80M

3: What players play where? ... I would take the time to put on an excel spread sheet, what players go to each franchise. Not based on cards, but on actual AB and IP of that player during the years 70 thru 79. So you get your list of players, put them on your team, and away we go.

Now enjoy the list below and please reply back as to why I don’t know what I’m talking about, because I don’t.

Location Nickname MLB Teams

Windy City Mob Cubs / White Sox
Big Apple Emperors Yankees / Mets
Tinsel Town Stars Dodgers / Angels
Bay Area Progressives Giants / A’s
Show Me State Fiddlers Cardinals / Royals
Lone Star State Riflemen Astros / Rangers
Boston-Philly Founders Phillies / Red Sox
Cincy-Detroit Ruby Cats Reds / Tigers
Penn-Ohio Hardhats Pirates / Indians
Baltimore-Atlanta Bayonets Orioles / Braves
Minnewaukee Double Suds Twins / Brewers
San Diego Montreal Expanse Padres / Expos

need a couragous soul to manage the Epanse.

I always thought you could put an intriguing team on the field with the Houston Astros between Cedeno, Bob Watson, Jimmy Wynn, Roger Metzger, and pitchers like Dierker, Wilson, JR Richard and Reuss all pitching in the dome...I think this team would at least contend, but nobody ever requested them.

I'm a SoCal fan as well, grew up 20mins from Dodger Stadium and 30mins from the Big "A" in the "70", I guess we would have to scrap to see who gets them. Maybe the first one to "tap out" loses.

Soup Zahn, I see what your idea is and I don't think it is completely unreasonable and your matchups do make some geographic or historical sense. But I think the problem you will run into with a pick your team as you sign up is that you'll have a difficult time once you get down to the last couple of teams. Some of the matchups would have real difficulty completing with some of the plum groupings.

I live in the Bay Area and I know I could put together a good team between the Giants and A's. I would be down with that. It could get really difficult for some teams and areas. Who would you merge with the Braves for example? It is a good idea. Just need to get the kinks worked out I guess.

I don't think you have to go regional. There really is enough for each team on it's own, I believe.

Brent,
I'm from Long Beach. We'll run the league twice. I'll take the Expo/Padre pair the first time, you take them the 2nd time. We'll combine wins both season and most wins gets a pair of movie tickets from the loser.

Yeah, it would have to be a heart over head thing. And who would take a Twin/Brewer combo unless you grew up there. Maybe it wouldn't fill. I don't know the dynamics of the members.

Wesley
The Braves were tough. Baltimore is the most southern of the Eastern teams, (other than the Padres) But I think it would be hard to find a Baltimore fan who cared much about the Braves, and visa versa but what you gona do?

If I can't get this idea to work, heres the next dumb on coming

Remember, its the 70's after all, the "Age of Aquarius"

how about the THE ZOCIAC LEAGUE

Each team composed of players only from each of the 12 astrological signs.

Its the Taurus Bulls vs the Pisces Fish.

The Braves seem a logical pairing with Milwaukee to me. The Twins could be paired with the Rangers and Senators. Both the Twins and Rangers originated from the Washington Senators.
