London, Ontario (CP) - The Central Division-leading London Knights are buyers this year instead of sellers, for the first time in 5 seasons. Their recent tailspin could change that if it continues.
Knight fans are hoping the recent moves will help prevent that from happening. There is some skepticism however. Yesterday, the Knights shipped utility-man Keith Moreland to division opponents, the Express, in exchange for Toby Harrah. They then packaged the 3B with All-Star reliever Kent Tekulve and traded them to the Struggling Bums for Buddy Bell and Jim Acker. An exchange of backup catchers was also included.
Knight fans were shocked to see Tekulve go, after leading the effective London bullpen all season. Knight brass believe that Acker and the rest of the bullpen – Jay Howell, Steve Bedrosian, and Frank DiPino – can pick up the slack. All have been impressive this season.
Fans are happy to see Bell arrive in town. He’s a gold glove caliber fielder and a hitter tailor-made for the home park, Dodger Stadium. Knights have been getting great performances from Carmen Castillo and Steve Balboni, but both have home-run park type power. Buddy Bell’s batting average and doubles give a great RH 1-2 punch with Robin Yount, who’s having an all-star season.
London boasts an impressive defensive lineup now. Mattingly, Yount and Bell are all potential Gold Glove winners. Barrett can hold his own. And it’s hard to beat the range of Van Slyke, Pettis and Raines in the OF.
As for acquiring Harrah only to turn around and trade him, GM BCM stated, “we picked up Toby, not knowing if we were gonna land Buddy. We liked Toby but he’s no Buddy Bell. If the Bums can/t use Harrah, I hope they can trade him to another team, as he’s having a good season.”
Rumours swirl of further deals. Gene Garber was rumoured to be headed North but he was snapped up by the Hakers instead. The acquisition of Bell, may leave Ken Oberkfell as the odd man out. There’s also been rumours of Dave Stieb being moved. The Knight brass have always loved Stieb on the team, but his best seasons were with other ballclubs. The emergence of Charlie Hough as #1 or #1A (behind Morris), may make Stieb expendable.
More deals or not, it should be an interesting and exciting stretch drive in 85!
