Hall of Fame 2006: Results Really In! Sutter Really Wins!

Our Mystery Card games - The '70s Game, Back to the '80s, Back to the '90s

Trammell (Simply put, STUD)
Rice (Extremely underrated)
Morris (Best big game pitcher of his era and one of the top of all time)
Hawk (MVP for a last place team)
Mattingly
Sutter, Smith, and Gossage (Relievers are as a whole get shafted)
And I don't know if he is still on the ballot but Sweet Lou deserves to be in if you compare his numbers to other 2nd baseman.

In no order at all...

1. Lee Smith (478 saves)
2. Goose Gossage (310 saves)
3. Bruce Sutter (300 saves)
4. Alan Trammell
6. Andre Dawson
7. Tommy John (288 wins and a surgery named after him!)
8. Bert Blyleven (b/c he ranks 2nd in HRs in the list of candidates-430 dingers! err, because he won 287 games and managed a 3.31 ERA despite giving up 430 dingers)

Murphy and Mattingly were great, just didn't perform long enough-too many .228 seasons by Murphy. Rice and Parker are tough calls.

I can't believe Blyleven isn't getting more support. I think he's the most obvious of the bunch. He was a better pitcher than Jack Morris, played for a lousy team and almost won 300 games... cmon!!!

Bert Blyleven,
Dave Concepcion,
Andre Dawson,
Rich Gossage,
Jim Rice,
Lee Smith,
Bruce Sutter,
Alan Trammell,

Here's my list - in no particular order. I will add that Jim Rice needs to be in the HOF, no doubt about it.

24 voters so far...

Postby Outta Leftfield » Wed Dec 07, 2005 11:38 pm

...which means nine added to the first 15 that I tabulated. Here are the current results, with 18 votes necessary to get the qualifying 75%.

Belle 1
Blyleven 12
Clark 5
Concepcion 1
Dawson 15
Garvey 1
Gossage 19
Hershiser 5
John 6
Mattingly 16
Morris 8
Murphy 1
Parker 6
Rice 18
Smith 9
Sutter 19
Trammell 14

So, while nobody had 75% after the first series of ballots, Gossage, Sutter and Rice gained enough ground to equal or pass the magic 18. It was a good round for relief pitchers, with Sutter getting votes on all 9 recent ballots and the Goose notching 8 of nine. Also a good round for Rice, with 7 of nine. Mattingly, Dawson and Trammell are still knocking on the door.

Like nyc, I remain a bit surprised that Blyleven isn't getting more support, especially since he's such a stud in the 80's game. This was a bad round for him--only 3 votes out of 9 after a pretty good start. 75% remains a pretty tough standard for all but the surefire first-rounders--and what makes this group interesting is that nobody quite fits that category. If even a few people doubt your HOF credentials, you're not going to make it.

The voting will remain open through the weekend. Invite your friends to add their two cents....
