Our Mystery Card games - The '70s Game, Back to the '80s, Back to the '90s

Postby voovits » Wed Jun 03, 2009 10:38 am

I agree with Tom. I even don't like the roto game in real fantasy baseball, all my leagues are head to head.
I toyed with playing the fantasim game a while back but didn't like the whole concept. I still may try it at some point, but not anytime soon. I do wish they would just port over all those players into an ATG mystery card game.

As far as the trades go, I like that idea where you could get a different season if the player is traded, but it may discourage other trades of other players performing well.
I always thought the idea of trading cash should be an option as well. That would open up more trades.

[quote:eff158afd3="TomP"]I've played this game since the original launch several years ago and one aspect of baseball which has always been lacking is trade activity. The mystery games, however, could promote trading if a rule was included where a new year was randomly selected for traded players (could be the same year). So, if you have an all-star player (Brett comes to mind) having a bad start, I'm sure there would be much interest in acquiring that player.

Free agent drops should obviously retain the same season.[/quote:eff158afd3]

It's an interesting idea, but I don't like it at all! Also, it could lead to exploits.

But sticking to 70s changes, I would want to see more players and agree that all MVP and CY young years be represented. Also I want better decisioning for my bullpen options.

Also would like situational Pinch Hit options: if need a hit or walk to lead off the 9th I might pick one guy on my bench, if I need a HR I would slot another.[/quote]

I agree with the MVP & Cy Young years, but there should be one avg to lousy year to keep you guessing. I think the situational pinch hit and better bullpen logic would be help. As it has already been stated, some players salaries are completely out of whack. That needs to be revisited. I like the idea of being able to see what year was available on the free agents. More to come later.

Are you talking about out of whack low or high or both? Please give examples.

Well, for one, Merv Rettenmund spends more time in the pool than Esther Williams...If you're playing with a $200M cap, you can go ahead and try him but at 60 or 80 nobody seems willing to take the chance or they dump him early even when they do. Bruce Sutter never has a season worth his salary. There will be exceptions for every player but this seems to be what I see from the leagues I'm in. In certain parks I guess A. Thornton and Bando work out but for the money, the .180 avg. with high OBP hardly seem worth the money.
On the other hand, Lou Piniella always seems to pan out well at 2.8, especially if the league is lefty pitching heavy. Nobody else seems to want Bob Watson in leagues I'm in so I put him last on my draft list and apparently I'm the only taker. He's always good even though he's not cheap.
Too expensive- F.Lynn, B.Gibson, BGrich, Yastrzemski, P.Niekro, Clemente can be when he only plays 110 games which happens alot. Belanger (twice the price as Metzger makes no sense), Aikens (6.4 for platoon player is too much, Blomberg for much less seems a better choice), Joe Rudi is pretty wrinkled from the pool, Dan Driessen (he's probably been used maybe 3 times in the 20 leagues I've been in, and hasn't done well) Gene Tenace (.160 avg.,an occasional HR in the right park and either a walk or a K when he isn't hurt doesn't seem to justify the 7M).
Like I say, everyone's list is probably different and I'm sure the people here have had really good seasons with the above mentioned. I just wanted to throw in my 2cents.

Sounds like the players that have a higher OBP mainly via walks (Rettenmund, Tenace, Bando, Rudi, etc) you believe are priced too high.

I tend to agree with your assesment.

I don't dislike that type of player (OBP), it's just that you can get the same type player, like Hargrove, for instance, at 2 to 4 million cheaper.

Regarding overpriced players...Morgan at 11.06 is in that group. His 74 card in ATGIV is 9.06mil, his 75 card in ATGIII is 11.03mil...Those are both cards NOT PART OF HIS 5! In fact there is only 1 card with a higher OPS we have and that's his 76 card. Replace one of his cards and put in his 75MVP 974OPS card and I can justify 11mil in salary.

Also A Otis is overpriced and badly represented in his 5 cards...You're talking about 7.5mil for a guy missing 2 maybe 3 of his better seasons as card choices. How 78 or 79 or both aren't choices is beyond me.

Put F Lynn in there too. Lynn has 1 card with an OPS above 872. If you replace 1980 with his MVP 75 967OPS card (again the single most ridiculous omission in the set!) then his value is there. I realize he is a 1(-2) at a key D position but he doesn't steal bases or make the pitcher hold him and 3 cards currently are 15game injuries...There is no way season for season F Lynn is worth 1.13mil more than D Parker!

Well something is going on right now. I just checked the transaction list for one of my 70's teams, and I got directed to an 80's league transaction list. Furthermore...that list had Benito Santiago (NOT San Diego #33) on it.

Somebody is playing around with new stuff in the background right now...

Wow, Very exciting stuff. Can't wait to see what all the new hub bub is all about!

I just checked out the free agents in an 80's league I'm in and I get players from the 2008 player set listed four times each. That tells me that they are merging the 80's into the main (ATG, 200X) game!
