Our Mystery Card games - The '70s Game, Back to the '80s, Back to the '90s

Postby Sykes25 » Sat Oct 08, 2005 9:25 am

One thing which CONTINUES to go without comment from MANAGEMENT is that there are some pricing issues and game options which we would love to see in the 80's.

There are tons of players who do not get used because of their salaries unless it is a horrible theme or if I feel like wasting $25 to give these guys playing time.

In addition, offering a frenzy option and different salary caps would help with the exisiting 80's game.

The only reason I am playing 1969 right now is to look at different cards. Please bring me back over here for my auto-league desires.

My win pct is .460 ... and I am an 80's addict.

What other game can you get up and check a box score and find out that Bobby Grich just hit his 40th homerun, or that he is hitting .228 with 14 homeruns through the same amount of games (my team). The point is you never know and getting up in the morning and checking the boxscores is just like the real thing because you never know what is going to happen. You can have the rest of those leagues, just leave me the MC and I will be happy.

My name is Ugly ... and I am an 80's and MC ADDICT, and I am very happy about it.[/quote:693e450543]

We're rooting for you to win that first championship, ug... Let us know when it happens, it will be very sweet.

That's an interesting idea. Actually, I wouldn't mind seeing the prices go down as the season goes along. You're using the guy for fewer games, you should pay less. It also makes it more like real baseball.

Another note: in general, I like '80's pricing. In fact, I prefer it to the 2005 prices where some big stars (Bonds, Edmunds, et al.) are over $10 million and often aren't drafted in regular $80 million cap leagues. Every player in the '80's pool is usable in any league-- unless it's a restricted salary cap league.

It's cool. I like the mystery card games, but I like the2005 game as well-- there's more strategy to it than meets the eye-- but I would love to see another mystery card format rolled out. The '70's is a great choice because most of us remember the decade (something tells me the '80s crowd is a little older than the 200x crew) and nostalgia is a big part of the 80's appeal for me. I would like to see another mystery card league. The 70's is an obvious place to start, but why does it have to be a decade? As most of you know the 80's is the only game in town for me and my money.

I agree with sykes that the player pricing needs some tuning, but I can live with it. TSN brings out ATG II and now 1969. If they start the 70's I can see the 5 packs flying off the shelf.

YountFan-- Are you talking All Time Greats with the mystery card? That would be interesting!

It may be nice to roll out another mystery card format with a totally different kind of game. Another decade game *could* play like '80's-- not that there's anyting wrong with it, and not that I wouldn't thoroughly enjoy a '70's game.

One of the problems I see with 1969 is that it's the exact same game as 2000X, with the exact same game-play, just with different players. A great thing about 80's is it's a totally different game from all the others, requiring different general-managing strategies.

Just wanted to keep this topic hot...

I haven't chimed in on this thread yet but it is obvious that I absolutely love the 80's game here at TSN. I've been waxing poetic about it in my blog the past couple of entries or so.

I came to TSN to play the free ultimate version of fantasy baseball. I used to be a heavy contributor on USENET in alt.sports.baseball.chicago-cubs. Every year we'd password protect a league and play for free all season using only the default trades allowed. (No buying extras.) The next year I found that playing free ultimate was not enough. So, I plunked down some cash for a 10x10 Draft and Trade team.

When baseball ended that year, I was devastated. No good Strat-O leagues were starting up with a new inaugural draft. (Netplay) All of the established leagues with openings had absolutely raped their dead teams so there was no joy in joining one of those either.

All the while I kept eyeing that Strat-O stuff at TSN and wondering, "just how fun can that be?" I thought, "I can play 2004 Strat-O all I care to solo style. 25 bucks seems pretty steep."

Then I clicked on the 80's link and saw all the cards that I remembered as a youth; back when Strat-O ruled the roost and making trades in the high school hallway between 3rd and 4th period was as normal as wearing acid washed jeans with holes in them.

I had the '85 Yankee franchise that year and closed the "biggest deal" of the season when I traded '85 Pagliarulo to the Phillies for '85 Luis Aguayo (!) during Algebra. (No usage limits for teenagers...) I knew nothing of the game in preseason. (Defensive ratings, etc.) All I knew was Pags didn't fit in and I'd take a flier on just about anyone that could play 3rd base and hit better than .230. Aguayo's '85 card is set up much better than the measley .279 quoted. It looks a whole lot like a .310 card (especially against RH pitching). Well, Aguayo was the toast of the league when he ended up with the batting crown hitting .358 in 500 AB's (20 HR's too.) Mattingly and Aguayo paved the way for a world series victory in our high school inaugural league.

I've been hooked to this game ever since.

I read all about the "mystery card" and thought, "how cool!" I can't do that on my computer. I immediately put Aguayo on my draft card for my first team. (.75 cents! What a bargain if I hit it!) Well, my crappy first team started out a mess. This mystery card thing had me going. What the heck! Made many moves after a less than stirling start. My team stats at the end of the year were lackluster to say the least:

.267/.399/.324 @ Royals (No DH)

Pitching wasn't much better:

3.91 ERA and a 1.32 WHIP

But somehow, with some hands on management, playing the splits, using intution and making the most out of matchups, this team found itself with a record of 90-72.

Ended up winning the World Series with this very average team of misfits.

It was like remembering what it was like to kiss your high school sweetheart on the lips all over again. Needless to say, I've been a big "rah rah" for this game ever since.

Best thing about the 80's game besides the challenge? It's the community here. So many die hards that have similar memories about these cards and this era. The 80's group is almost like going to the bar (like on the hit TV show Cheers). Everyone here knows your name. Lots of good people here. Met many good internet acquaintances here like [b:6da538cf91]seanreflex, DJ Trickster, 1st Command Commando, and Outta Leftfield [/b:6da538cf91]who I correspond with from time to time via PM. The other vets here on the boards are just downright friendly and helpful too. [b:6da538cf91]Sykes' and YountFan's [/b:6da538cf91] advice really improved my game early on.

I look at the 80's overall standings board every day after I read the boxscores to see if anything has changed. I'm in awe of players like [b:6da538cf91]abnerdoubleday, djtrickster, dc irish, DarthRuvo, czaoth, and Panzer Ace. [/b:6da538cf91] Geez what winning percentages and titles!

I remember joining [b:6da538cf91]Mav's (?) [/b:6da538cf91]80's tournament soon after I started playing the 80's game and quickly found out what the difference was between being a "successful vet" and a "wanna-be." I really "wanted to be" after the conclusion of that tournament so I set a goal to match [b:6da538cf91] YountFan's [/b:6da538cf91] success after that tournament's conclusion. I chose YF because of his track record and his sage advice on the boards. I've been trying to catch him in the overall standings ever since. (This is the first time I've ever mentioned it in public.) I don't know if this goal is achieveable or not. (Might end up being like Sysiphus (?) [wasn't he the guy doomed in mythology to push a boulder up a hill for eternity only to have it tumble back down every time?]) Nevertheless, I won't feel like I've made it in this game until I can match points with him in the overall standings...so YF, if you're listening try to slow down a bit. (Nice 16th playoff team I see too... ) :D

Lastly, TSN really needs to see the potential for another Mystery Card game and get crackin' on it. 1970's would be cool but I am game for anything mystery related. Bring on the 1990's if you want. Give the new mystery league more league options and stats. This stuff and advice has been discussed ad nauseum in many other threads. TSN, you've got the suggestions already. No need to reinvent new threads with the same good advice from the community.

Long live the 80's game! Get your 5 packs while they're hot!

P.S. All hail the mighty [b:6da538cf91]Penngray[/b:6da538cf91]! Ubermaster of Strat-O.

You play enough games you make the playoffs. As I said before the key is monitoring your team. My problem lately is hanging on to guys too long, but I'm working on breaking that habbit!

I feel the same way as all y'all. I like all the Strat games, but I check my 80's teams last because I know I'm going to be spending the most time on them. I love doing the analysis and making the moves all season long.

BTW, I was also introduced to Strat in the mid 80's, so these players mean a lot to me, too. I love looking at and playing with the cards I used to have on my teams, or coveted on somebody else's.
