Jimmy, thanks for the advice. I checked and this is a vinyl liner which we were told by the pool guys (we interviewed 4 before picking one and they all said the same thing) that if we drain the pool, we will ruin the liner. The DE is the chemical we put in b/c this is an earth filter not a sand filter (which I would have preferred). DE is basically white calcium powder made from gound up sea shells.
The good news is that our fix on the backwash worked and we are back in business. We added chlorine and have gotten alot of the garbage off the bottom (it's now floating around in the pool). I think I can call this "My Summer Science Project." Now we'll see what gets done first, this draft or my pool cleaning job.
