Gold IRON Mitt

Postby Semper Gumby » Tue May 02, 2006 8:34 am

I'd love to know how TSN's game engine decides gold glove leaders as Decinces (3B golden glove leader) leads the league in errors with 9.

Psycho Kllers

Postby hechojazz » Tue May 02, 2006 1:51 pm

My anticipated big sticks (McGwire .231/.488/.333 and Winfield .258/.467/.297) have been languishing, but the upper tier of free agents has been picked over and rejected, sometimes multiple times. So despite the prohibitive price tags, there appears to be little to gain in turning them in...at least they've got good D. And at least some other players are turning in unexpectedly impressive performances so far (LaValliere, Pasqua, Wallach, White, Herr...). But sometimes you've just gotta roll with some cards that are less than ideal, or at least hope they'll turn out to be better cards in the long run.

Picked Over?

Postby Semper Gumby » Tue May 02, 2006 7:41 pm

I'd say picked over and sniffed but not licked. Some players have stayed on a team's roster for two complete series at best.

Surprisingly, the leading veterans have add / drop faster than Paris Hilton has changed boyfriends.

Of course, you'll always hear the conventional wisdom - keep them for at least 100 ABs and 6 or 7 starts.

I contemplated keeping Kirby's card for the season but keeping him for over 150 ABs and seeing little output from him didn't seem prudent. Considering his lopside split, zero power, and HAL's treatment of him in clutch situations, I see Year-1 all over his card.

Otherwise, I stuck with Fat Fernando through his early season struggles and his card has come up huge as of late.

Still pissed at HAL for pulling my starters too early and believe TSN needs to review HAL's logic so we have consistent treatment of players and managerial decisions. Otherwise, you might as well not check anything and be happy that HAL doesn't force Pete Rose to pitch.

So what's the conventional wisdom on minimum number of IP before one tries to decide whether to dump relievers or not? Seems to be a wide range of opinion on that question, if you look at what's happened in this league so far.

I know and it is surprising.

In the financial services industry, churning is discouraged

In looking over my completed teams, I'm mindful to discount the hot start more so than the cold start especially when it comes to the cheap players.

I had a few stiffs that I swore I nailed the Bando HoF type year only to see the overperforming Year-TURD card revealed. Otherwise, I had and probably would have dropped a blue chip player only to see him earn his HoF ticket from it.

Heck, I dropped Pedro G's best year card after 21 games b/c he had zero HRs in Wrigley.

Of course, I kept a bad D Evans card because he had a few hot streaks only to see his turd year show up.

I see the transaction list churn seemed to slow this weekend.

There are still a few never-been-dropped free agents looking to make a squad.

Come on and sign them up.

We even had a trade this past week.

Swapped Eddie Murray's severly underperforming  Year-2 card (3L season) for a multi-owned underperforming Jack Clark's Year-1 card.

While Eddie's Y2Y card is a keeper, playing him for 50 games with a sub .245 BA and .290 OBP output seemed criminal. Either he had just bad dice or hated the ball park, I didn't see another 50 games coming to him where he'd go En FUEGO at Dodger.

So far, Eddie and Jack are enjoying their new ball parks.

In all the reorganization, I may have landed Armas' 5R card though which would be sweet in Dodgers as Griffey's card is clearly a singles season
