Got Ted Simmons in autodraft. Never used him because of that arm but I think I have heard that certain people like him. What's the consensus? Worth keeping or should I pick up Kennedy or Davis? I am in Wrigley.

I'd rather have Simmons @ Wrigley. He can pound the ball. Don't worry about the arm.

he only seems to have 2 great years: 79 and 80. 83 has great avg and obp but not so much power. Do 82 and 83 perform better than his stats imply?

Simmons rocks! I have had success using him at 1B or DH and usingn a real catcher behind the plate. You save a little money that way since you don't have to waste .75 on a backup C. I would only use Simmons in parks that have a HR rating over 10.

I've had good luck with Simmons when I've used him.

Ted does do well in higher bp hr parks. The man is a hitter.

While I agree that Simmons can hit. I think people shy away from him because its hard to measure the impact of that +2 arm. He is clearly good for 200+ SB allowed if he catches full time. How do you measure the 100 or so extra bases he allows over a catcher with a good arm? Not to mention the reduction in DP turned? I dont have an answer to how you measure this impact. Has anyone come up with a way that this could be measured?

Yeah, but alot of those guys with arms cannot hit. I figure it is a wash.

Back in the early '80's I was in the Seattle area... listening to a Mariners-Brewers game on the radio. I had tuned in in the late innings and Ted Simmons came to bat.

Dave Niehaus, the Mariners play-by-play announcer remarked that Simmons had been "thrown out for the cycle" that day.

He had been thrown out at least once at every base, including home.

I've never heard of that happening anywhere, anytime other than that day. I have searched the internet trying to find a box score from that game... without success.

I was wondering if anyone else had a memory of that game.

Anyway... a little Ted Simmons trivia to spice up this thread... not that it needs it.
