Short rosters

Postby honestiago1 » Sat Aug 05, 2006 3:47 pm

One thing I've done in the computer game that has made things more interesting for me is to draft rosters of 21 players (20 seems to small a roster for 80s pitching, and have a mixed DH, non-DH league (AL with DH, natch). I go with 9 pitchers, 12 players. I play an NL team, so most of the time I have 4 bench guys.

Anyway, what this does is force me to draft a balanced staff, and to take chances on guys who play multiple positions. I lose some defense, obviously, since I cannot afford specialists (think about it -- a good glove IF and OF'er who can't hit would cost me two of my 12 slots). On the pitching staff, I simply have to take at least two good SP/RP's (at least some with some innings), and I must have 2-3 SPs with *'s (meaning I might take a mediocre * over a good non-* [ex: I took Moyer over Sid, simply because Jaime gave me a third * in my rotation]).

During play, I end up having to stick with some pitchers a little longer than need be, My subs become more important with the pitcher batting so often. I have to be creative, in other words.

I'm wondering if it isn't possible to include a shortened rosters option in some leagues, maybe not 20-21 players, but certainly 22 is doable. That's only one less than the current 23. Might be interesting to see how people draft if they can only have 9 pitchers.

My perfect nine man staff would be something like:

3 * SP's (two of them should be 7*'s)
2 SP/RP (both are 6/3's)
Long reliever (a 3 or 4)
three short relivers (all 2's [or in some forums, a pair of 2's [one wioth a closer rating] and a 1/closer)

Just something to think about (or possibly waste time)...

TSN says 23 min with 10 P so your thoughts are a waste of time that we can never get back...thanks

See, the mystery card has spoiled me. And playing the computer game means I have to come up with ways to make drafting more interesting (I can get the same dudes almost every time, strangely enough).

On another note, I find it hard to believe that TSN wouldn't immediately change their policies based on my musings (and no, Yountfan, I am NOT giving you back the 15 minutes you wasted).
