Base stealing settings question?

Postby jball6372 » Wed Nov 29, 2006 6:16 pm

If i were to set my base stealing at aggressive, but then on a players card set his at "do not steal", does this mean he will not steal a base even if i set my manager stragey at 'AGGRESSIVE" ?

No Easy Answer

There's no easy answer for your question since we really don't have access to what is happening underneath the hood of the 80's game engine.

I believe that the global settings carry more weight than the individual card settings. I can't prove it though.

Here is my unfounded hypothesis on what kind of success rate is required for HAL to green light a runner:

[u:d3edcd8090]Global Settings[/u:d3edcd8090]
Aggressive = 65% success rate or better is a green light.
Normal = 75% success rate or better is a green light.
Conservative = 85% success rate or better is a green light.

[u:d3edcd8090]Individual Card Settings[/u:d3edcd8090]
Steal More = Offsets global settings by -5%.
Steal Less = Offsets global settings by +5%.
Check Nothing = Uses global settings.

I am basing my theory on what HAL does with Aggressive, Normal, Conservative settings for SUPERHAL Baserunning from the game CD ROM.

Take it with a grain of salt but my intuition tells me that it is probably pretty close.

If you set the player to "don't steal", that will apply regardless of your overall stealing setting. Note that "don't steal" (based on how it works in the PC game, and on observation of the TSN game) most likely means "don't steal [i:fe1fc73587]if held[/i:fe1fc73587]", and the player still may go for the steal if he isn't being held on.

But, you shouldn't set stealing to "aggressive" anyway. All it will accomplish is to drive down your SB%; who cares if you're stealing a lot of bases, if your guys are getting caught so often that it hurts more than it helps? Set it to "conservative" or "extra conservative" (I prefer the former), and set individual basestealers to "steal more."
