Darrell Porter...Is he a git-r-done type of player, or over-priced? His cards look great, but so do Ron Hassey's... and I've never seen him rock.

I have Porter in Dodger and we start tonight. Any info on Porter would be great. Thanks.

Porter's a bum

I have yet to see Porter do anything, I am sure someone has but I have had him 3 or 4 times and he has never done anything.

A might fine Porter season, in a hitters park though, not sure about Dodger.

Jimmy C, I've had him twice, once in Oakland (current) and once in Wrigley. I've been lucky to have his best card ('79) both times, so I like him! With this card, I've hit him all over the order, including 2nd. As with anyone, it's all in the cards. For the Wrigley team, his BA was low, but everything else was solid. Lefty, good D, good OBP in all years. Probably a little pricey unless you get '78 or '79, but not too bad.

Good luck.

Thanks guys...I'm going to give him a try. Even though my team is in Dodger, it seems like there was a sale on hitters parks in my new league!! I've never had him on my team...so here goes!

Check these guys out...

He can be effective, even in his worst year. If you have the salary to spare that is.

He is not a "value" by any means, but he can be very servicable and can hit from 5-8 in a lineup depending on his numbers.

My pecking order for Catchers when in an auto-league using Jack Murphy:

Tettleton
Kennedy
Porter

Hassey on the other hand is more hit or miss. Lefties kill him too.

Hassey can rock in the right year...

I currently have Hassey hitting .336 with .948 OPS in 134 AB. An injury revealed this was his 1985 year: .872 OPS, 9R. You definitely have to platoon him, and he's not a great defensive C (though few mistakes), but he's giving me a LOT of offense.

I would say any of his three top years should be excellent in a platoon setup. Hassey saved me after two previous catchers couldn't cut it.

Hey Outta...Hassey has some great looking cards, but usually I see him dumped in leagues to FA. I used him once, never figured out his card, then dumped him for under-performing. Maybe I'll try him out down the line again.

Usually I try to get Pena... great defense, super arm, good enough bat...but...takes a LOT of injury time off.

Hassey update:
There's been a little regression to the mean, but basically Hassey is still hammering the ball. In 211 AB he has: .322 BA, 11 HR, .370 OBP, .536 SLG, .905 OPS. Not bad for a catcher!

Maybe the reason he ends up on the FA pile so much is that you more or less have to platoon him in his best years. He's 5R, 9R and 4R in his three really good years. The other possibility is that maybe you've just seem him in his two off years, which aren't much. Anyway, since I have him in his 9R year (he's hitting .339 vs RHP/.226 vs LHP) and my RH catcher was way below the Mendoza line, and since I had the spare cash, when I learned Hassey's year I shelled out 2.21M for Dempsey who has a strong platoon bias vs LHP. Dempsey's got a .783 OPS in 72 AB. That's an expensive catcher platoon, but it's also HIGHLY productive. :D
