Newbie Playing Strato80s

Postby TSN_3143 » Fri Oct 07, 2005 7:20 pm

It has been very informative to read prior postings as I attempt my first 80s lge. Would you folks help steer me as my lge has come out of waivers & I'm unsure where to go w/ my team from here?

http://fantasygames.sportingnews.com/baseball/stratomatic/80s/team/team_other.html?user_id=56959

I'm very happy w/ my starting position players but was thwarted in my attempts to pick-up several pitchers.
Should I(must I) give up one of the OFers? Which one should it be? To buy what for the team? Memorial Stadium is home (a posting suggested a traditional style as opposed to say, Jack Murphy for a newbie).
By the way, I have never seen such a feeding frenzy as after the waiver results came across. In just minutes dozens of players were snapped up. Wow!
Thanks in advance for any feedback, you guys have really helped alot of pp. - Kevin P.S. Ugly Jerry is in this lge.

If you are going to drop an outfielder, Carter may be best to let go. He will hit some HRs but his OB is very low.

Welcome to the 80's!

My first move would be dropping Phil Bradley (since you have Kirby in CF) and put that money towards a upgrade for Ruthven. You should be able to get a good pitcher along the lines of Ken Forsch, El Presidente, or Rick Rhoden.

Bullpen looks good, rest of your lineup looks good. With the mystery card, you can't really judge a team too accurately on paper. That's what makes this game so great!

Carter or Bradley

I'd be inclined to keep Bradley over Carter and play him in LF. Then dump Ruthven and try to get a better SP in his place.

Scouting RH SP

Postby TSN_3143 » Fri Oct 07, 2005 9:06 pm

Thanks for the advice. While I mull it over I'm scouting an upgrade for Ruthven. In Memorial Stadium whom would you prefer to have - Denny, Hoyt, Witt or DMartinez? Or should I bite the $ bullet & go up to Stewart or Candiotti? All RHers & w/ the exception of Denny all * pitchers.
I want to save a couple of shekels for when I find that I need a reliever (or whatever).

I've been in several leagues where Hoyt does real well. I've had one really good season with Witt. If Alexander is out there he is a good option, as is Boyd if you are looking at a five man rotation.

Pitching

DMartinez gives you the possibility of some great years. I think most of Witt's years are similar, so you'd get a starter who will get you some innings, and win 10-15 games. He won't carry a staff, certainly, but he gets K's and tends to throw more good starts than bad. I've never liked Stewart at all -- lots of hits allowed (but then, so does Witt). You might get one of Hoyt's really good years, which means NO WALKS.

Just a thought, but perhaps check the cards of these pitchers and see who's got the 2B and SS X's in the right spots. That may be something Stewart will bring to the table, and if you have good Def, he will feed right into it.

The note about Boyd and Alexander is good. You can get some decent starts out of either of them, though Boyd tends to give up extra base hits when he does get hit (Fenway effect is on some (most? all?) of his cards).

Finally, Denny is a big gamble. However, his good year should be easy to identify.

(And, yeah, I don't think these suggestions are very helpful at all. Of the ones you mentioned, thuogh, I'd take Witt. I think even his bad year is not too incredibly bad.)

"DMartinez gives you the possibility of some great years."

Overall I would take D. Martinez. He has three great years (one more than Denny), and two really bad ones. You should know early if you have one of the good years. You can dump him after 5-7 games if he doesn't pan out.

I'd prefer Hoyt in a park that suppresses HR. Hoyt is big on the ballpark HR--any park with a HR rating over 4 is dicey for him in my opinion. Candiotti can be good but is never lights out, and he's more expensive than Martinez. If you can afford Martinez without major sacrifices elsewhere, he would be my guy.

I may be biased because Martinez was a pitching ace for me on a recent team, going 23-9.

Well Here's My Team

Postby TSN_3143 » Sat Oct 08, 2005 7:32 pm

First. I must thank Honest, Outa, Fletch, Panzer & '...Doet' for their insight. What a welcome resource! If only there was active discussion like this on the ATG circuit.
Decided to go w/ dropping Carter rather than Bradley & picked up DMartinez. Honest - I just had to go for one of his transcendant seasons after comparing his #s to Witt's. Is it me or is Martinez under-priced compared to several others? Anyway, I had just pulled the trigger on getting him & soon afterward there was Outa's ringing endorsement.
Easler (woo hoo, a lefty), Gerald Perry & RoyJack(son) finished up things. Won't be doing much platooning w/ my O due to sending so many $s to frontliners. So I say now anyway. Famous last words.
The ballpark & mystery card variables have my full attention, which is why I went for proven starters w/ D skills & somewhat strong SPers. I'm thinking of just sending them out there to play w/out too much tinkering by me until I can get a grip on the nuances (subtle or not) in this game.
My decision to not pay much for RP may come back to haunt me.

The link is in my first post at the top of this thread.

Thanks again lads. - Kevin aka Slim Shady, Bumpy Johnson, Sage Auger (my son picks out my handles)
