Has anyone ever gone with the idea of drafting players that appear on the team lists? What I mean is that, coaches "draft," say two of the major league franchises (one American, one National League team). When they set up their drafts, they can only take players who actually player for those teams. Granted, there's some crossover, but some players (Brett, Yount, Sandberg, for example), only played for one team, so you'd have to draft that team to get access to them. In addition, you'd have to weigh offense versus defense. Cubs pitching, for example, ain't too good (though quite a few of their pitchers had good years with OTHER teams).
I assume that, were this league set up, you'd have to play in one of the stadiums you chose. This could also present problems. For example, say I want Sandberg and Yount, so I draft the Cubs and Milwaukee. Normally, I'm a manager that prefers pitcher's parks with VERY low BP HR ratings. With County and Wrigley, I wouldn't be getting exactly what I wanted (and moving guys out of their natural habitat affects their hitting).
I'd also have to think about where to draft whom. Sutcliffe and Reuschal for example, appear on my list, as well as CLE (Sut), LA (Sut), NYY (Reus), PIT (Reusch) and SF (both), respectively. If those teams are drafted, I have to consider whether the opposing coach will rank them. I couldn't even get Lee Smith outright, as he has a BOS year. On the other hand, Teddy Higuera is MINE, as is Chris Bosio, so I can rank them last without worrying about losing them.
On the whole, here's some of what I'd get unopposed with a MIL-CHI draft:
SP: Higuera
SP: Bosio
1B: Cooper
SS/CF: Yount
RF: Deer
LF: Oglivie
3B: Molitor
2B: Gantner
1B: Durham
2B: Sandberg
SS: Dunston
Hmmm... IF=Cooper, Sandberg, Yount and Molitor (wow...could I afford it?). OF=Oglivie, Dawson (if I get lucky) and...well, whoever I can scrounge up (or I could play Dunston at SS and stick Yount in CF.
Anyway, it seems an interesting idea to me, though I'm not sure who'd want to try it out. I'd be willing.
