Boredom with 1969

Postby FletchGriswold » Fri Oct 28, 2005 8:47 pm

I'm not sure if any other diehard BTT80's managers have made the same mistake I have, but if not, hopefully this post will keep you from doing what I did.

I made the huge mistake of buying a 1969 Strato team. At first, I thought it would be cool, with all the players (even though I wasn't even born yet). But, what I feared, came true. I am ABSOLUTELY BORED OUT OF MY GORD with that game. I'm in first place, and I could care less! Regular 200x Strato and 1969 Strato are pathetic in comparison to the Mystery Card concept with the 80's game. The debate has raged on the message boards - Mystery Card vs. no Mystery Card. Please, save your $24.95 and invest it in another 80's team. Don't make the same mistake I did.

Long live the 80's and Mystery Cards! :D

Hey Fletch,

i made the same mistake --- I bought a 69 team.

i (unlike yourself) am in last place ... but I too could give a crap .. I don't even check the boxscores most mornings. the player pool is waaaayyy too thin --- not nearly enough players in my mind. nobody talks, nobody trades, it just was a waste of my money. I wish I hadn't strayed from my true love .. i hope the 80s will find it in her heart to forgive my wayward soul

Thanks for the heads-up guys. I was thrilled in '69 by the "Amazin's" and thought I might give the '69 game a chance. I think I'll keep my money in the best game in town...Long live the mystery card!!

I hate to pile on here, but I must third the sentiments expressed here on the 1969 version of Strat. I purchased two teams and was initially kinda excited about the different strategy that would be required in the game. Back during the TSN 1961/1969 survey thread, I had suggested on these boards that TSN go with a Back to the 1960's game instead, since it would more accurately represent the players of that decade, and the game would provide greater long term interest. In reflection, I feel very strongly that this is the case. I am bored stiff with the one 1969 team that I am managing, and can't even muster up the enthusiasm to enter my second team into a league. It's kind of lousy that some of the great players of that decade are relegated to free agent pool hell, and a handful of single season nobodys are elevated in stature beyond their real life value. Since the player pool is thin, there is very little room to maneurver. I check in on my team once every three or four days. If this was a "Back to the 60's" team, I can guarentee you that I would be following this team every day. Sorry TSN, time to go back to the drawing board on this one.

OK, OK this is a little crazy. The whole argument goes back to do you like the mystery card concept or a one year only strat game. 1969 will be no different than 2005, 1950 or any other single year of strat cards. The 80's game gives you more player depth to play around with which is necissary since you don't know if you have a good card or not. When it comes to any single year Strat can only make cards for whoever played that year. They can't just dream up fictional players to have a deeper player pool.

I happen to enjoy '05, '69 and the 80's game. The one year games play differently from the 80's game but I enjoy the different strategy for each game. I am not good at the 80's game yet but I am having fun learning the ropes! The people who only like the 80's game and no other should never stray to the 1969 game expecting it to play differently than any other single year game. In fact there is a smaller player pool than even the 200X games due to the fact that there were less teams then than now.

The ATGII game is more closely related to the 80's game than the 1969 or 200X games because of the larger player pool.

All I am saying is stick to what you like and don't expect the 1969 game to be any more than what it is....a one year game.

Boredom is as boredom does

I mainly play and love 80's strat, but wanted to try 1969, because I wanted to see if I could win with Cepeda (and don't like ATGII, as I don't like to have hall of famers at every position.) It is kind of cool to see all the 2 - 1 games, the studly starting pitching, the lack of talent at some positions, but that is baseball. There do not appear to be too many goofy cards to throw things out of whack. Of course, I would think with a starting rotation of The Dominican Dandy, Claude O'steen, Tom Terrific and Gaylord Perry, and top rated D, my team would be doing better than it is (hovering around .500,) but alas I cannot score runs. In that respect 1969 is just like 80's for me, I cannot score in 80's either. (Or is it just because I was 0 - 6 last night?)

What do foks in general think of ATG II. I've been looking at it lately and am tempted to give it a try....

I too, have been tempted by ATGII, but the fact that you know what each of your cards are capable of doing, I just don't see the "fun" of managing a team. I do like the player pool much more, but I think the same boredom would kick in after about a week of games.

I just wish TSN would create a BTT70's and a revamped BTT80's.

Absolutely. Yeah, I guess I'm too much of an 80's snob to try the other stuff. The reports from others that have ventured away from the 80's game really confirm it for me that I would be bored.

Don't get me wrong. I'd love to get a chance to play the cards from the 70's and 60's. It's just that the single season concept is too much like the CD ROM game without the cool controls like: SuperHAL bullpen management, depth charts, usage limits, etc.

The uncertainty of the 80's game makes me want to pay attention. It makes me want to dive into the stats. It makes me want to take risks. It makes me want to keep tweaking my manager strategy.

I already know that is has been stated from the upper echelon at TSN that the Strat-O port would not be able to handle SuperHAL bullpen management and usage limits but that really would help everyone's game to be able to include such monsters as these controls to the mix.
