Another season of getting slaughtered at Fenway?

Postby baracus68 » Tue Nov 01, 2005 10:30 am

I’ve had at least some success playing small ball in the Astrodome and homerball at Jack Murphy, but I can’t seem to figure out Fenway. I had the same problem back in my pre-'80s ATG II phase. The season is ridiculously young, but the beating I just took in the opening series (including an all-time personal worst 20-0 humiliation) has me worried that I’m in for another long season of being on the wrong end of 12-7 pummelings. I figured I’d try to build a team on OBP, right-handed power, and defense:

Anybody got any tips for surviving a season at Fenway?

I've had two teams, both successful at Fenway and I am working on my third which just started last night. High OBP, decent speed, decent defense, so-so pitching. The first won a championship, the second lost in the semi-finals. I've had no luck at other stadiums. I seem to be able to hang around .500 at Dodger stadium.

Fenway blues

I haven't tried Fenway. I had Wrigley and ended up 80-82, mainly because I didn't draft for a power advantage, and my starting pitching was not too good.

Assuming you can't get the top notch SP's, I would recommend spending more on relief pitching (which it seems you have). Sid and Pascual might do very well for you. Boyd could be a problem, but give him some time. If he doesn't come through, dump him for a 2-3M pitcher, then use the excess to upgrade a .75 to a 1-2M (if the .75 isn't getting it done). I'd be aggressive using relief pitching during homestands, and adjust accordingly for road games, depending on who's starting for you at the time.

Hitters: I'd get a cheaper, LH-hitting catcher to augment Buck Martinez. I'd use the excess to upgrade relief pitching.

Other than that, you seem to have some balance in your lineup. You have excellent defense. It's way too early to worry about fixes.

Sometimes you're the windshield, sometimes you're the bug. I went though a losing streak of about 8 games in the middle of a current season. Just had to ride it out. Team's now on a 18-6 run winding into the last 3 weeks of the season. Give it time, like they do in real baseball. Don't worry yet, man.
