I recently got beat in the finals by a Panzer Ace team (it was his 10th title, putting him into the lead in that category even though he's had or has only 18 teams!) that had both Mike Young and Luis Aguayo as absolute mashers. Leaning on cheap talent gave his team great depth and the ability to pick a killer lineup for any situation. Check it out:

It got me thinking about the importance of those cheap guys. Forgive me if this is something that's already been covered, but I'm wondering what the ultimate under-1 mil team would be. One-season wonders, consistently decent role players, versatile utility guys, etc. I'll start it off with those two guys who helped beat my ass and add a personal favorite, Gene Garber, who saved 35 games for me one season on what is arguably his third-best card ('86).

Aurelio Lopez is a pretty steady reliever for under a buck. I usually try to draft him. I seem to always get him too, so I'm probably the only one who likes him. :roll:

Dayley is a very good pick for .75.

Rudy Law can be great.

SP's: I like Allan Anderson quite a bit.

Bob Bailor as a utility man?

I have had Mike Caldwell win 19, 18 twice and 17 once.

Polonia and Remy are great. Polonia kills RHP and can run. Remy is very good against RHP and is a solid defensive 2B. I also like Mike Young and the Jerrys - Royster, Perry and Browne.

There are a number of <$1 RPs that have a couple of good seasons. In addition to Brusstar and Garber, I like Howell, Andersen and Worrell.

I went back and looked at my teams to see who had performed well. Nothing spectacular on the hitting end (except for Morrison's crazy numbers in the Astrodome), but these guys all provided pretty good numbers for the price.

Other guys I've seen others use with success, or that I'm curious about, are Miguel Dilone, Jim Presley, Ron Leflore, Juan Samuel, Tom Niedenfuer, Ray Burris,

Niedenfuer's '83 card is a killer. Best year: 45 saves, 0.96 WHIP, 2.69 ERA. Had some good years with Bob Kipper and Bob James, too.

SP could be Pastore: 10-7 3.69 ERA, 3 saves before I figured that i had a good card.

Best year of Presley's in Riverfront: 475 Ab's 25-87 .297/.339/.552

He can be a monster if you get the right year. All for just $750,000!

You'll have to live with his less than stellar defense, but he's a good bet to be a bargain for you. If anything his price should probably be a bit higher.
