Burleson vs. Metzger

Postby Larryrickenbacker » Sat Jun 06, 2009 2:16 pm

Howdy,

Both are rated as "1"s, but is Burleson worth the extra money? Chime in!
I usually opt for Metzger but his OBP can often fall below .300 and well..was wondering how ya'll have done with Burleson.

Burleson can actually chip in with some offense. Rick has two .290 BA cards and his lowest BA is .248. Metzger's best is .250.

I prefer Burleson. I won my only championship with his #3 year (79) as my SS in a 60 mil league. He did OK.

I like Metzger. I draft a "1" rated SS for his defense. Burleson has a little more offense , but they are both #9 hitters for the most part. I think you should almost never cut a '1' rated SS. The defense will almost always be worse and catching more offense is a low percentage play from the free agent pool. That being said, given Burleson's higher price there will be the temptation to cut him if he stinks. When you draft Metzger, your expectation is that he is not going to contribute much offensively and his price is very low. I would rather take the extra $$$ saved by using Metzger and spend it on other positions where there is a better chance of getting meaningful offense. BTW, I have won a title with each of them. Neither hit over .230 and neither of them drove in or scored more than 50 runs. The team with Metzger actually won a 110 games in Fulton County but obviously got its offense elsewhere.

Metzger and use the extra to upgrade other places. He can actually hit at times and will get more than avg # of triples. Anything reason if he really suck you didn't waste too much cap room on it

Interesting viewpoints

Howdy,

I lean more towrd YountFan and DurantJerry on this one. That being [i:1ba00f8575]said[/i:1ba00f8575], I recently replaced Metzger with Burleson, as I had some spare cash laying around at mid-season.
It's too early to tell, but so far Burleson is tearing the cover off the ball. I also agree that spending extra money for a "hitting" SS with a "1" rating is almost like trying to design an animal that's like a Hippo, but with feathers!

To each his own but you can go cheap at any position to save money elsewhere. You could take Duffy Dyer at 1.14 just because he has a -2 arm and use the extra cash elsewhere too. Or Doug Flynn at 2B......

Hey how about a Flynn/Metger combo to take care of defense up the middle and really load up on hitters or pitchers elsewhere? Actually that might work well if your other hitters are all hitting well.

Metzger is in my top 5 of favorite 70's SOM players. For offense he will normally hit a good bit of triples and can actually steal a few bases. To me Burleson/Belanger just don't consistently give enough of an increased offensive advantage to spend the extra money on them. I can get D Doyle at 2B to offensively outperform those 2 guys.

Take Metzger and upgrade elsewhere!

You can go cheap anywhere to get extra hitting, but SS seems like the best places to do it. First of all the talent pool is not that good. Secondly, they are the most important defensive positions. So, if you can get a star defensive player at the most important defensive position at a very cheap price that allows you to add better, more explosive corner offense it seems like an OK approach IMO. Metzger has the pluses of being a switch hitter and being able to run, while Doug Flynn can do neither and is really awful in his bad years. Using Belanger or Burleson is fine, but they can easily produce "Metzger-like" numbers. I see them cut often. I would just rather be paying a Metzger-like price for my Metzger-like numbers and not have to worry about cutting an offensively inept "1" rated SS because he cost too much to be hitting lousy.
