Don Sutton - Keep or Drop

He's driving me crazy. Not only is he pitching well and getting losses in both of the 70's/80's theme leagues, he's doing more of the same in a regular league.

Here are his stats through 9 starts:

1-7 record, 5.89 ERA 1.29 WHIP 53H 14BB 43KO in 52 innings.

opponents are hitting .256 against him, and he has given up 11HRs
Home stadium is Fulton County and he's pitched about half his innings there.
Splits suggest it's probably his 83 season as he's getting lefties out at a little bit better rate (.247 vs L .264 vs R) but it still could be 84.

I always thought he was one of those pitchers who you don't drop no matter what, but wins and losses are the bottom line I can't keep going on with him pitching at 1-7. The only thing keeping him on the roster currently is WHIP, which I value higher than ERA when try8ing to determine pitchers year.

Should I cut ties with him or ride him out figuring he'll turn it around?

I have had these issues and the WHIP is ususally also on my mind. The the game is about wins and losses and does 1-7 really do it for you for the big investment $$$$$$?

I think you can find a cheaper pitcher with a better record for you :D

You need the wins, not a 1-7 record and a pretty whip. I see him dropped 50% of the time.

he should still have a better record than 1-7 with a 1.29 whip, so it's just bad luck on rolls or bad run support i'd say... but the odds are on your side for him to start getting wins out of it, but cheaper guys who can do the same thing in some years should be an option too.

Sure, cheap SP that can give you a 1.29 WHIP are a dime a dozen. :P

Dennis Martinez was available and not used yet. I went for him.

Thanks.

i agree he should stick with sutton for a minute at least... odds are in his favor for wins to come... I'm curious about voovits offense, but it's bad luck either way to be 1-7 with a that whip, especially if its a hitters park league.

Well Dennis Martinez pitched a complete game 4 hit shutout, striking out 8. I won 4-0.
That had the makings of a 5-4 loss if Sutton had pitched.

I have Dennis Martinez in the Kingdome and he is holding his own right now including a shut-out there.

Time will tell about Sutton, but Martinez is usually pretty decent.
Good Luck!
