The 70's As They Used to Be - 1979 Season

Postby FAaron » Sat Nov 21, 2009 10:44 pm

As the BiSox and the Phillies battle it out for bragging rights in 1977, I thought I'd take this opportunity to post an idea which was discussed in the league chat, but may have been missed. 1979 marks the last season for the league as originally constructed. But I thought it might be fun to extend the league into the decade of Reaganomics, sunglasses at night, New Wave and Cyndi Lauper: that's right, let's keep the same 2 franchises, but use the players for the odd numbered seasons in the 80s league, starting with 1981, the year in which the players went on strike, and Bowie Kuhn screwed over the Reds and Cardinals (both teams had the best records in their divisions, but neither made the post season b/c of the wacky split season format caused by the strike). Are the other owners interested?

Hey Fred, I'm not a big fan of the 70s and 80s mystery games....and my Orioles/Tigers have been a 70s disaster. With that said, if everyone wants to do the 80s version, I will participate. I don't want to break up the group. BTW, when does the '79 season start? My team has been built for weeks. Just waiting to jump in.

I'd pass on an 80's version...If the group wanted to do another 70's go round but use 70/72/74/76/78 I'm in...That changes the dynamic on several players including Reggie and Pete

Not interested in 80s. Would be interested in another 70s game with a redraft of teams. Sick of using the same players over and over. (I'm never ever drafting Bruce Kison, never ever again).

I'm curious as to why some people don't like the 80's game. Is it simply the decade? Is it the game itself that doesn't have the bells & whistles as the 70's game? What?

This bias goes both ways too. I have seen some long time 80's players swear to never play the 70's game, especially when it first came out. Most of them probably have caved over time but who knows? I enjoy both and can't really see why if someone enjoyed one they wouldn't enjoy the other.

My problem with the 80's game is a few things...One I don't like the look and feel of the game interface (bells and whistles), but my biggest problem with the 80's game is I don't think there is as good a diversity of player salaries...so many players are lumped together in about the same price range where it doesn't cause you to reach on a player. That includes the top players. Also I don't like being able to have 23 man rosters. I feel that extra player even if an unused bench guy makes you have to better evaluate players in the 70's game

Thanks for the honest response jmc. Bernie has promised to bring both mystery card games into the same game interface as ATG, 2008, etc soon. When this happens I'm sure that most of the concerns you make will be made better. Obviously the game interface will be the same as the 70's as well as 24 man roster minimums. I am hoping for a revamping of the player salaries as well as maybe adding some new players to bring the player pool up to about the same size as the 70's.

When these things happen the only difference should be the player names and cards.
