VENTING Page for the 70s/80s Players Championship

Postby chess2899 » Wed Jan 13, 2010 11:08 am

This page is dedicated to managers that want to vent about their 70s or 80s teams in the 70s/80s Championships. The bright side is that we haven't yet completed 1/6 of the 1st seasons.

I'll go first:

My 70s team is 6-21, worst among all teams in any league. Everyone in my starting line-up has been injured and have their worst year other than 2 players. Even the players I wanted during the draft and didn't get have their worst year for other teams. I have dropped Bonds, Cey, Murcer, Carter and a slew of others. This is a magical season. If I want a certain player, I get their worst year.

My strategy is changing. I now pick up players that I don't like such as almost Hall Of Famer Dave Kingman. Perhaps, that will give me their best year.

For my 70s team, I got Killebrew 70, who before today had no homeruns and a avg below .200 (until he hit 3 homeruns last night!) in a hitters park.
On top of that I got top seasons from Oliva (pretty sure it's 70), Tony Perez (likely 70) and Kingman (hoping for 79). Add Fisk to that lineup in Fulton County and that's pretty nasty.
You know you got something good going when there's no room in the regular lineup for Auerbach 78 or (I think) Tyson 76.
To go with this I'm getting top performances from Marichal and Rau.
Admittedly, most of the above guys were free agent pickups and I've had a limited time where everyone has been healthy and in the lineup at the same time, but before my 3-0 sweep last night, they were only a .500 team, and they still have allowed more runs than they scored.
As good as I think they have the potential to be, they're going to be chasing mamillers rebels all season long.

My 80s team is a typical one for me. One day I really like them and think they're going to be good, and the next day I think they suck and that I need to overhaul the team.
I knew the position was thin in both games, but I never realized exactly how bad it is in the 80s game. I'm trying to get rid of what I believe to be 87 McGee, but there is absolutely nothing out there that I feel comfortable replacing him with.
On the brighter side of the 80s, I have the Chris Bando karma working for me. This is the 4th season in a row where I got his 84 card.

Right now, my 80's team is a disaster at 7-20. Unfortunately, I like most of my hitters, and some of my injury reveals show they should be good. However, Eric Davis (.174/.250/.367) and Carew (.259/.310/.321) are particularly underperforming. Kirk Gibson and Marty Barrett are also doing poorly, though they have fewer ABs . . . And I have a platoon in RF that is going well enough, I'd like to see how they do both playing full time. I think my main problem though, is pitching. Bosio is my top starter, and though he has had some very good, long starts, he has had some poor ones as well. So maybe I'll end up dropping some hitters and improving my rotation.

My 70's team may be coming along. We have won six straight and have moved into 2 games of first in a tight division. I traded Bench for Rice, which hurt, but seems to be working out so well. Hopefully Carbo decides to hit and hit well, it's been tough watching him struggle . . . good luck guys!

I must be the King of giving away un-earned runs in the 70's.

My team has given up 21 un-earned runs so far, while getting back a measly 4 un-earned runs in return. My team leads the league (by a long way) with 35 errors in 27 games. Munson (2 e5) is tied for the league lead with 7 errors. UGH.

You forgot to look at my team which is tied with yours. 22 un-earned runs and 31 errors. Paul Schaal has made 8 errors in 21 games.

It could be why both of our teams are .500 even though my team is 3rd overall in runs scored.

Went 0-6 last night, my 80's team to 7-23. Made some changes but I'm probably going to need some help. But yeah, I'm not really gonna drop or trade Eric Davis.

shocked

Postby chrisfu » Thu Jan 14, 2010 12:53 pm

I have no reason to 'vent.' I'm shocked. I have never won a league championship, my manager rating has to be one of the lowest in the tournament. I entered thinking it would be fun and a learning experience but I just hoped to maybe, if I did well, to finish in the upper half.

Through 30 games, a long way to go, my teams have got me in 4th???? place? I can't believe I'll stay that high. I have never had a decent 70's team, but my 70's team has tied for the best record in the league. It has a few weaknesses but I like the team, feel free to correct me and tell me why they will crash, but I have never had a 70's team this strong. I like their chances to compete.

I have had a few decent 80's teams, have made it to the championship before losing. My tournament team is over .500 but I think they have real weaknesses, drafted Tony Gwynn and got his worst year, have Tony Fernandez in his worst year, drafted Don Sutton and was pretty sure it was his worst year (I've had him several times and I always get his worst year) (I still like drafting him). I think this team will crash.

Even if so, I'm still happy if I get one team to compete and keep me in the top 12 through the initial play off series. If my next 2 teams, keep me on the leader board, I'll be shocked and delighted. But not counting on it....

Watch out chrisfu....Ragnorak69 and my team (both 7-23) will make a run at you before this tourney is over ala tortoise and the hare. :D :D

Last 2 years, I sat in the top 10 position until the last league....lost 100 games and faded into oblivion.

Chrisfu, you have 2 good teams, so the best of luck to you!

It's funny what I posted . . . because now I am thinking about dropping ED! lol . . . but not for Willie Wilson and Don Baylor . . .

EDIT: btw, how many people have dropped Carew because he is hitting so poorly? 92 ABs and still not really coming around . . . I mean you draft him because even his worst year, he can get on base and here he is, not doing this one job!
