Have you won big with a "second-tier" shortstop?

Postby baracus68 » Tue Feb 07, 2006 12:19 pm

What "bargain" shortstops have helped you win a lot of games? In my few seasons, I've had decent success building around ones at short, but I wanted to see examples of teams that won with guys like Smalley, Gagne, Franco, Concepcion, etc., or even ultra cheapies like Dejesus, Guillen, and Schofield.

I'm a little rusty from my TSN layoff but to expand your player pool you may look for the fielding chart that equates the ranges, e.g., 1e15 = 2e4 [not a true statement but shown for illustrative purposes only].

It might be on Diamond Dope or another TSN SoM player's website.

Otherwise, you can win with a lower $ shortstop presuming you are valuing his glove more than his bat and your park requires the defensive capabilities more than offense.

If you go low, I'd look for a solid glove and bolster your offense in another category.

Not sure this is helpful but a tour of the various complete leagues show winners using everything but the kitchen sink to win - assuming the kitchen sink's card isn't its best year.

I have won two championships with Dejesus/Oquendo and Dejesus/Stillwell sharing the shortstop duties. I have had pretty good luck using guys like Dejesus, Schofield and Smalley at short.

I've won 3 championships. 2 with Concepcion, one with a combo of Owen & Schofield.

Had Concepcion on a 98-win division winner and went to the finals with Dunston.

I didn't win the championship but my team was drastically improved after I dropped Guillen for Franco. The team OBP was sub-.300 until I made that move.

Champs with Alfredo Griffin and Concepcion. Cheap middle IF is a good way to win. Why pay a lot when you can get the same for less.
Spend money on the sluggers. where it belongs

Link compares D rating by some math I don't understand
