Something is fishy

Postby ROBERTLATORRE » Sun Mar 21, 2010 8:34 am

Good, now that I have your attention ;-)

I am in multiple leagues where a manager with a very high number of points drops multiple players daily, some of which play 1 game and often go 2-4 or 3-4 with HRs and then he cuts them, only to do the same night after night.

What's up with that?

It's almost like he knows what card he gets after 1 game.

I mean I understand letting HAL set your lineup and seeing who he chooses and where he bats them, but how can you cut a guy that bats in the middle of the lineup and goes 3-4 with a HR and a bunch of RBIs?

What am I missing?, I haven't won any rings in the 80's so I am obviously missing something.

Rob,

Nothing fishy. I think I know who you are talking about. Sometimes the guy picks up a player, doesn't play him and drops him the next series. I've picked up players that he has dropped before and had success with them. I think it is just his style of managing his team. No insight into anything as far as I can tell.

So maybe the only thing fishy is MY MANAGING STYLE then....Ugh...was trying not to end up there...

You know at first I thought you were talking about me, but then I noticed that you said "a manager with a very high number of points"...

I have been doing something similar with a couple of positions over the past several days in one of my 80s leagues. Though I feel stupid because I was making a mistake for a while which could have resulted in an improper read on the players.

As far as a guy being picked up and not played, I think the reasoning behind that is that if HAL doesn't play someone in any of the 3 games, then his card is likely not very good.

On a similar note, I have been noticing some questionable HAL Logic. The most head scratching one was his decision to start Mickey Hatcher (I think 87) at 3B over Bob Horner (79) vrs lefties in the Kingdome.

If HAL was so smart and made all the correct moves why would anybody even touch the settings or lineups? The sooner people realize that HAL cannot shed any insight into who is good and who is bad the sooner you will start doing better as a Strat manager. voovits, I'm not speaking to you specifically but all Strat mystery card managers as a whole.

I agree

Leave Mark alone. He is a good manager and has his style of managing. There is nothing wrong with having your own "system" and if I play in a league with him, I don't mind picking up a dropped treasure every once in awhile. He has no "secret knowledge".

A far as HAL is concerned, I did let HAL set my line-up a few times in the past. I recall he batted Mattingly dead last. After a few days, I dropped him. Someone else in my division picked him up. It was Mattingly's best year and I watched my competitor march all the way to the Championship. I agree with the Bombers. Be your own manager!

HAL sat Brett against LHPs and RHPs for 3 straight games, I cut him...he is now knocking the cover off the ball for the team that grabbed him after I cut him.

Desperate times call for desperate measures, I am completely incompetent in the 80s cards set and NEED TO WIN!!!!! LOL.

Seriously, if I can't get it done in this 5 pack, I am retiring from the 80s card set and staying in the others that I am not so bad in.

I think I know who you are talking about also and I've been in quite a few leagues with him. There's only 2 managers I've seen do this, and only 1 of them is in the tourney.

I've picked up his fast drops and had about 50/50 luck good card/bad card. The amazing thing if I'm thinking of the same manager, he is consistently very good so somehow it works out for him overall.

He does really well, so it's making me want to try it. Pick two players at a position, let HAL pick the better player?? Only real downside is the salary penalty, so it would need to stop before the vig gets too high.

Can't hurt for me in the 80's. I can hold my own in the 70's so I won't try it there.

It turns out that HAL was right about Brett in the league I mentioned above, sure enough the reveal came on the other team and it was the 1 bad card.

Nothing to lose to try it I suppose :-)
