pitcher injury question

Postby The Conndor » Fri Jul 09, 2010 2:14 am

I got Don Sutton and Rob Murphy injured in the same game... facing the same hitter, Willie Aikens. As odd as that is, that isn't the reason for this post.

Sutton was injured for 3 games, Murphy for 15. Now, I've had starters get hurt before, and I know that, if they had > 30 starts in a year, their length of injury tends to be somewhat low (if they had 30 starts, assuming 4 or 5 in a rotation, that means they were active for most of a team's games that year). Since all of Sutton's cards are 30+ starts, one should assume his injury length would be short.

Does any similar kind of logic apply to reliever injuries? Murphy's was a groundout with no one on base, so that only eliminates his 88 card. Based on season performance so far (.96 WHIP in 19 IP) I feel pretty sure about eliminating the awful 90 card. Murphy had 87 appearances in '87, 74 in '89, and 57 in '91. Would he be just as likely to be hurt for 15 games no matter the season, or does the fact that he is out for 15 make it more likely to be the '91 card?

Thanks in advance for the help.

It is not odd at all that both pitchers were injured while pitching to Willie Mays Aikens. In a DH league (which most leagues are) pitchers can only become injured while facing the DH and a 6-12 is rolled. The length of the injury has no bearing on number of starts the pitcher had. It is simply based on IP. If the pitcher had 200+ IP he has a 3 game max injury. 199 2/3 or less and he has a 15 game max injury. Therefore most SP are 3 game max and all or virtually all RP could get injured for up to 15 games.
