Franchise League?

Postby Soup_Zahn » Mon Jul 19, 2010 2:47 am

New guy here,

Is this a good idea?, and old idea, or a flawed dumb idea? but has there ever been a FRANCISE LEAGUE[/b]?

While selecting my first team ever from the 70s roster, I found I liked to fill it with Dodgers and Angels, you guessed it, I’m from So Cal.

I was thinking it would be fun if I had to build my team just from Dodgers, or parish the thought, just from Angels, to play other teams built just from Reds, Cubs, you get the idea.

You wouldn’t have to worry about losing players to other teams because they’d be restricted to their own franchise as were you.

12 teams per league, maybe and NL only, or AL only league

Salary cap would level the diamond between the haves and have nots.

If a player played for more than one franchise, three season cards put him on that team. If it’s split 2 seasons to 2, most AB or IP.

I’m sure this idea must have been done before, but I’m so excited about it, I’d even take the Angels.

What does anyone think, Soup

p.s., I posted this in the top forum as well, I hope that was okay?

This theme has been done before but it has been a long time ago. I would be up for this theme. One thing you have to consider is that each player has 5 possible cards and they are most of the time NOT from the same team. So if a player played for the Angels on 4 of the card and with the Yankees on 1 card then he would show up on both the Angels and Yankees team lists. What we did in the past was say that he could only be used by the team the had the majority of the cards. In this example he could only be used by the Angels. You do run into the occurance of a player having 2 years with a team, 2 years with a second team and a single year with a third team. In this case we broke the tie between the two teams he has two cards with by simply saying the team he had the most AB or IP for, between those two teams, gets him.

Another way to do it is to simply say that any player that shows up on a team list when you sort the players by team is elligible for that team. Then every team each player has a card for is elligible for that player at any time. You compete for them in the auto draft.

Come up with some set rules and make a post here in the 70's forum and people will sign up.

I'd be down. How was it decided who gets what team in the past?

The one I was in was first come first served. You sent a message to whoever started the league, requesting a certain team and when 12 different teams were selected a private league was set up with a password to get in with that team. I'm sure there are other ways but that's how this one was done.

You could list the owners 1 thru 12 and then get an independent person to run the randomizer to get a random order to then pick what franchise they want. Another way is the state lotto numbers. When all 12 have picked a lotto state they use that night's pick 3 numbers and put the draft order in that order (either high to low or low to high). This also gets a random draft order.

Or it can just be first come, first served to pick a franchise like The Senators mentioned.

I liked The Bombers way better but in Strat-O with mystery years ALMOST any team could at least contend. In the league I was in the Orioles won the championship but barely finished over .500...

I enjoyed the franchise theme leagues I played in a while back. In those, it was broken down by a specific year. If a player didn't have a card for that year, he was excluded. If a player played for more than one team that year, the team he played for most would get him. In some cases, you would be hoping no one would pick a certain team so you could get a key player on your team. It took a ton of work on the commissioner's part, though, to come up with a list of who was eligible for which teams and in which order. Teams that didn't have enough players would get draft picks to fill out their teams (capped at a total of $2 million x number of picks).

Regardless of any rules you come up with, I do think the league needs to be random as to who picks what team.

I loved the specific year franchise theme. I think it died due the start of the 70s/80s Players Championship. It would great to get that started up again.

I also loved the specific year franchise theme from the 70s. Just thinking about it makes me feel like I'm watching Kojak.

I like the theme league idea, however I think we would need to pick a way where we draft our teams according to draft order. I really don't like the idea of first come first serve. Maybe the teams need to be matched together where it is fair across the board. Somebody with experience with setting this up, needs to take the bull by the horns. Rules need to be clearly established before we start, any volunteers?
