Newbie questions on Base Stealling Ratings

Postby Soup_Zahn » Sun Aug 08, 2010 7:28 pm

Sorry guys,
I grew up playing a little known baseball board game called “Gil Hodges Baseball” with my brother. We played it ever summer from kids into retirement. Anyway, because of that, I never played Strat-O-Matic, so could I have some help with the steal ratings? Thanks

Q1: What does the asterisk mean on some of the steal rating?
Q2: What does the “minus or dash” symbol mean on the steal rating?

Example: Joe Torre card reads (E) 4,5/12 (11-4)[/b]
Am I right to read this as?

Good lead on rolls 4 and 5 (sum of two six sided dice)
Picked off roll 12 (sum of two six sided dice)
Safe stealing with good lead 1 thru 11 (twenty sided dice)
Safe stealing with poor lead 1 thru 4 (twenty sided dice)

But what about this Julio Cruz (AA) *3-6/- (19-15)

Q1: What does the asterisk mean?
Q2: What does the “dash” after the “Slash” mean? Where is the pick-off number?
Safe stealing with good lead 1 thru 19 (twenty sided dice)
Safe stealing with poor lead 1 thru 15 (twenty sided dice)

Next questions: I assume the catcher arm rating is combined with the numbers in the parenthesis give a final success percentage for stealing.

For example

Johnny Bench has a (-4) for an arm rating. Using Julio Cruz steal numbers are adjusted as follows?
Safe stealing with good lead 1 thru 15 (twenty sided dice) because 19 minus 4 equals 15

Safe stealing with poor lead 1 thru 11 (twenty sided dice) because 15 minus 4 equals 11

Last question: Does the pitcher hold rating combine with the catcher’s arm rating and apply to the base runner’s successful steal rating, or does the hold rating effect the base runner’s lead of rating?

Sorry guys…..Guess I should buy the board game huh?

*3-6/- (19-15)

The asterisk means if the runner is not being held on, he automatically gets a good lead, it's a situation that hardly ever comes up.

Now a correction on the Joe Torre steal rating:

4,5/12 (11-4)

the 12 is not a pickoff, the 12 means that he attempted a steal and was automatically thrown out. Pickoffs and balks are different and are not listed in the steal ratings.

So in the case of Cruz, the dash just means he does not have a roll where he's automatically thrown out stealing.

The catchers arm rating is also combined with the pitchers hold rating to get the final steal percentage, however the final number can not exceed +5 or -5. You did the math right in the example, you just have to figure pitchers hold, and cap it at + or - 5.

Any time you need a rules clarification, feel free to ask here (though getting the board game would be a good idea if only because it's an awesome game.)

Here is the complete list of rules. In all cases, refer to the "super advanced" rules.
