Here is the lineup HAL put in for me on my 70's team when Yaz was injured:

Stratzillas XII AB R H RBI AVG
S.Kemp DH 5 1 1 0 .056
B.Allen 3B 5 2 2 1 .455
W.Mays CF 5 2 2 1 .333
W.Stargell LF 4 2 3 0 .462
R.Hebner C 3 0 1 3 .333
D.Murphy RF 5 0 1 1 .200
D.Sims 1B 5 3 3 1 .462
M.Trillo 2B 3 0 1 1 .500
I.Dejesus SS 4 0 1 1 .239
-- -- -- ---
Totals 39 10 15 9

HAL put Hebner in as my catcher, even though I have 2 healthy catchers on the team. Murphy could have caught. I don't understand how HAL in his infinite wisdom puts Hebner behind the dish?

Oh yeah...I won all 3 games even though Heb gave up 6 stolen bases in the series (no errors). HAL cracks me up...

Never quite seen anything as bad as that before. I've had HAL leave my second catcher in as DH and play a position player at C after an injury, but never have I seen a healthy catcher stay on the bench like that.

HAL is only capable of looking one deep on your substitution chart. So, Yaz gets hurt and I assume Sims is his backup. HAL can't then go a step further and move Murphy over to catcher. So, HAL now looks to your bench for a catcher and can't find one. (If Murphy wasn't already in the starting lineup, he would have caught.)

If Sims (while playing catcher), on the other hand gets hurt, HAL will put Murphy in at catcher, assuming he is listed as Sims backup.

You would be better off having Mays backing up Yaz at first.

Don't get me wrong. I agree this is a stupid move, but it is a result of the one-level limitation for subs that is built into the AI. You can count on the same substitution being made next time, too, if you don't make a change.

It was the start of the season so I didn't load any backups by position. I like to start off that way and see what HAL does. This time it was pretty comical. HAL wouldn't put Kemp at a position b/c he was the DH, which is pretty dumb.

I loaded backups by position now so hopefully that takes care of it.

It's good you can laugh about it, Jimmy. Of course, winning a sweep that night might help. :D
