What would youdo?

Postby Chuckgnh1 » Mon Nov 01, 2010 4:54 pm

So the last time I posted similarly, got a lot of responses. That was the 2009 league, and I was going with Petco Stadiu, and looking for recommendations. Well, failed that miserably!!! This is my first attempt at '70's league, and I'm psyched! How does my team look at present? I'm going to be just a tad sentimental about this, but of course want to win, too. Waiver claims are tomorrow night, and I'm hoping to improve. Just looking for some input as to what I'm lacking.

Just realized I didn't include my link. Here it is, and I'm not sure it'll post correctly before the season starts. But I'll try.............

You have a good start. Bench and Rice are great. Gibson can be great but I am not much for spending on starting pitching in Fenway. keep eck cut the rest of your starters.(can keep Gibson if you want) Cut the rest of the non * starters and go with 4 man. Lots of good pitchers in the under 4 mill range if they are not taken

Longborg
denny
Norman
Grimsley
Drago
perry

Many more to look at.

Cut boog not worth the money
Cash can be ok..
Cut Blair much better choices in CF then him for you.

You will need tons of Right handed power in fenway. whatever you do not move Auerbach is one good season is great.

You have a good start just keep in mind that in fenway you have to out power the other teams.

Good luck.

This is a 100M league, I notice, so I think it's OK to spend a bit more on SP*s than you are now doing. IMHO, Gibson is OK and you might want to add another 5M+ SP* while cleaning out some of the cheaper SPs. Definitely grab Gaylord Perry or Fergie Jenkins if they are not gone. A good cheap SP* not yet mentioned is Doug Rau.

The team looks strong defensively but needs more offensive punch. Areas to work on are CF, 1B and DH. I agree about dropping Blair and Powell. I would shop for a solid CF and slugging 1B and a potential platoon partner with Nettles at 3B. DH can be any good individual hitter or possibly a platoon. Sometimes in a a 100M league you can stockpile a good potential player that you can't immediately use, to see if you need him later.

I'm guessing this team is pre-waivers. Who are the top available free agents and what is your waiver pick? If you drop Boog or Blair, that would clear some cash. Keep us posted on how it develops. And good luck! :D

I would keep Kaat in a slugger park like Fenway. From what I've seen he seems to put up fairly reliable numbers in slugger parks.

Is Jenkins ever not drafted? I don't think I've ever seen that. If he is available, but all means grab him.

With 2 solid SP*s like Gibson and Kaat, playing the SP-non* roulette can be fun (kind of like hoping you got '78 Auerbach). There are a lot of $3M and under guys who have a strong year or two that are worth chasing.

Waivers in 1/2 hour

Thanks on Kaat - I thought he was worth saving. The key here also is non-DH league. Not sure where I'd go in CF - I like a strong defensive one, and not many left out there. I was offered Messersmith and Fisk for Eck and Bench - I like Fisk, but losing too much power, I think. Jenkins is gone, too bad for that. Seaver's out there - what do you think on him?

So, I picked up Garvey, Harrah, and Otis in CF. Gura and P. Niekro.............some major turnover. Not much speed, but have the power, I hope! Not so sure about bullpen...........I might want to beef it up. What say my advisors?

Garvey can be excellent. Famous Amos Otis....not so much unless you will be facing 50% LHP.

(channeling Ed McMahon). I grabbed Otis when he was released - just a quick reaction - thinking defense and speed. Only problem now is.............who to replace him with??? Kind of like McBride, and then, look at the roster chart.

I doubt that link is going to do it for you, but sure enough close to 50% are lefties. That's starters, though. I'm wondering if there's much value in shutting down baserunning - cumulative -6 sounds good to me. Well, this is the fun in tinkering.
