OK, I can't come up with a reason for this under ANY circumstances.

70's game, 3 game series vs 1 LHP and 2 RHPs.

HAL starts BATEMAN?!?!? over Bench in all 3 games. In the game vs the LHP, Bench plays DH?!?!?! wtf is HAL doing?

He's lost him mind.

Even if it is Bench's 4L card, he still is better then Bateman's best, and the defense is not even close, and they are both RH batters.

HUH???

The less you try to figure out Hal's moves, the happier your life will be. Just roll with it. Although if this was a modern day MLB manager and he made these moves....the firestorm would be insane....I would be forced to listen to Harold Reynolds pontificate about it ad nauseum on the MLB network....

Putting Bench at DH is a smart move because he has a good bat and it will extend his career. Sparky Anderson regretted playing Bench so much and had the National League had a DH, Bench would have DH'ed quite a bit. So, good move by HAL, very thoughtful to give Bench's body a rest.
