Santangelo a defensive replacement at catcher????

90's game, bottom of the 14th inning, I have have the lead,
Jack Howell is brought in as a fielding replacement at 3B, that makes perfect sense, but
F.P. Santangelo is moved from 3B to catcher, a position he never played, to replace Taubensee, my regular catcher??? It didn't hurt me, but why would this ever happen???
